  • Up Front: They Have the Best Rides,

Also considered part of the third wave is sex-positivity, a celebration of sexuality as a positive aspect of life, with broader definitions of what sex means and what oppression and empowerment may mean in the context of sex.

I just don't know. I understand and appreciate that women these days can find power in sex. Absolutely. But then I see all these young women in skimpy clothes, being overtly sexual, and I wonder. I know they think they have control of their sexual power, but I wonder if they understand how much they are giving away. Women like Ren are admirable, I think, in their choices. They use their sexuality as a commodity, and keep their power. I'm not saying that I think prostitution is necessarily a choice I'd want my nieces to make, but women like Ren et al are adult women who've lived life enough to know what they want. Young women who throw their bodies around, though. That's a different matter. It doesn't feel, or look, like sexual power to me. It seems, sometimes, as if they have bought into this myth that they can be like blokes. I don't see it as power in blokes either, that behaviour. It's normal adolescent searching for self, sure, but power? Thanks for the post, Emma. It really is something I've thought alot about over the years.

  • Stories: The Internet,

I've been online for about 13 years I think. It started with discovering chat rooms - one was a pagan one that I just wandered into, and enjoyed their company so much, I was a regular for a few months. I once was a member of a NZ chat room. Fascinating people in a very creepy way, some of them. Most of them were deeply poisonous - I discovered this only because we had a lot of chat meets, and I met a woman who I became friendly with. I ended up going to Hamilton to spend a couple of nights with her, to hang out. Turns out afterwards that she had spread the rumour that I was a lesbian. I didn't mind, really, I just thought it was a bit tragic. I met my very closest friend online - I call her my platonic soul mate. I would never have found her if it weren't for the internet. As I would never have met any of the good friends I have met online. I use the net as a social tool, and a research tool, and everything in between. I use it to arrange meetings, and to meet new people. I really can't imagine my life without it.

Ooh. They've all got pert nipples. I wonder if they had a fluffer standing by?

  • Hard News: Just marketing to the base,

I think you're all still not aware of the fundamental issue: It is not wrong to be poor. It is not wrong to live in a car, at your mate's place, in a cheap hotel or even under a bridge.

I don't often get personal online, believing, as I do, that one shouldn't say anything to someone online that one wouldn't say to their face offline. So I'm not really breaking my rule. Because I would definitely say this to you, Grant, if I ever met you. And I apologise in advance to all my erudite and reasonable PA colleagues.
    Grant - you're a dick.

  • Southerly: Primary School for Beginners,

I should have specified, giovanni - most kids love primary school these days, and thrive, absolutely. I'm thinking, however, about a couple of schools of my acquaintance where the teachers seem not to have moved on from the draconian standards of yesteryear.

Jackie, I was wondering if this is a general revolt against all primary school teachers by the likes of you, or are your kids spreading the word?

Alas no, Sofie. Mind you, if we had any grumpy bum neighbours like that kindy, then they would have complained yesterday. It was a very, very loud day. There was a lot of little boys crying for their mums, and a lot of other boys yelling at the top of their lungs. Methinks the highspiritedness training is going a little too well!

    Priest rubbishes welfare system

Bit ironic, what? Considering that the priesthood relies almost entirely on the goodness of their parishioners. Bah.

  • Hard News: I've been hybridising for a…,

Thanks so much for letting us know that Denis Welch has a blog. Bookmarked immediately!

Absolutely. I regard Denis as a very fine writer. Indeed his novel, Human Remains, is one of my very favourite books of all time. Meaty, delicious, and very satisfying. And Craig, many thanks for the Patti Lupone video. I'd never heard of her before, and isn't that a great voice she has?

  • Southerly: Primary School for Beginners,

Oh, quelle dommage! Still, all these horror stories fit in very neatly with my strongly held belief that one learns very little of any value at primary school. I always hope that everything I teach my little ones - you know the sort of thing, subversion in every form, high spiritedness - pisses off all the grumpy primary teachers majorly. Crowd control 101 still seems to be popular in teacher training institutions these days.

On a lighter note - Danielle, I just wanted to compliment you on your cats' names. Laverne and Shirley? Classic.

  • Hard News: A bit tacky, no?,

I'm so sorry that your friend died, Russell. He sounds like he was one of life's characters.

That was 1988, and Michael was delighted to arrive in London to find that disco was back, in the form of house music

Oh, same. Cheers Michael, and thanks for the lovely song.
