  • Hard News: The Huawei Question, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Fair enough, Martin. I’d like the courtesy repaid and not be accused of playing the racist card for sharing Russell’s “WTF?” at Gordon Campbell’s piece on this – which, to put it politely, is well below his usual standard of analysis and argument.

Totally agree with you there. And yeah, that asylum seeker analogy was... umm... unfortunate.

  • Hard News: The Huawei Question, in reply to Chris Waugh,

I’m calling the Greens, Labour and Winston responses to the Shanghai Pengxin/Crafar farms saga Yellow Peril writ large and hysterical. I’m calling the same on the Greens jumping up and down about Huawei.

You know, I'm not disagreeing with you on this particular issue, but I would like to reserve the right to express concerns about the Chinese government (or one or another of their companies) and their actions without being called a Yellow Peril-shouting racist.

Just like I would like to be able to criticise the Israeli government without being called a Jew-hater.

Maybe its harder to differentiate in the case of China since the same word ( the Chinese ) is used to describe both the people and the government.

  • Up Front: Safety Net,

Cis, mpreg, wincest, spec-fic and now sub.

These are all words I have had to look up after reading one of your posts, Emma. Well, I didn’t need to look up sub, because I know what a sub-editor does but it hardly ever involves physical injury. So in this context it made little sense. I then realised that it was a different kind of sub.

Not that I’m complaining, mind. I just seem to live a life where these concepts don’t form part of my day to day life.

  • Up Front: Safety Net, in reply to Emma Hart,

Hence the need for an Internet Face-Punching Service.

Well, there was a stab-in-the-face device suggested at Bash.org a long time ago.

  • Hard News: Friday is for all the things,

Since we’re on Swedish music, I thought I’d share this from a few years ago. It won the best music video award and is kinda cool. This one’s in Swedish (or more accurately, in Skånska).

Love First Aid Kit. No, I wouldn’t have guessed that they are Swedish, but since I knew I didn’t have to. What I can’t get over is that they are only 19 and 21. And sisters. They are currently at No 1 in the Swedish charts.

ETA: I would assume that the accent is deliberate for the genre.

  • Hard News: Notes in My Pocket,

Of course, there is a website dedicated to what people carry in their pockets.

It's rayon and it came from Strangely Normal

Were you aware of the fact that rayon is a manufactured regenerated cellulose fiber and is neither a truly synthetic fiber nor a natural fiber.

Well, I wasn't. So it's like paper? Will it disintegrate in rain?

  • Hard News: European Horror Stories, in reply to giovanni tiso,

There is a shorter, very accessible piece on the "it's not a moral argument" argument, here.

    Busted link - try this

Austerity seems preferable to all of those.

Especially when it's not your austerity, of course...

Edit: umm yeah, what Stewart said too...
