heh. i *demand* that everyone make the billy-goat-gruff jokes whenever james turns up.
I was going to suggest we just start cyber-chanting: "IN! YOUR! FACE!. IN! YOUR! FACE!. IN! YOUR! FACE! IN! YOUR! FACE!."
But that would be gloating and rude, so I won't.

what i like most about mark's posts is the way they kind of break into rap, or modern poetry of some variety,
nearing the end,
of what ever he had to say,
as if unwinding,
or running out of puff.and the way
there is a total
lack
of punctuation or capitalisation
its like readiing
e e cummings but
crap -
Did anyone else think Obama's speech was a bit lame? As in it could have been any speech during his campaign?
Obama is president elect, and you're grumping about the speech being a little off-key?
Um, waiter, could I get a round of double-shot wake-the-fuck-ups over here for all the whinging nitpickers.
@ James. In case you didn't notice, the Republicans just got their arses handed to them on a plate. It's hard to think of ways the trashing could have been more comprehensive.
Have a think about why that happened, and when you're ready to rejoin us in the reality-based community with some decent Monday-morning quarterback insights, feel free to do so.

You're probably right, but I'd rather be having a steak dinner. If Saturday night turns out to my liking and I'm still doing the humpty dance on Monday morning, you have my permission to come around and do to me all that shit you no longer have a S. 59 defence for if you do it to a child.
Craig, just to make things crystal clear, my primary emotion at the moment is relief. The same relief I'd feel if after eight years of having a P-house next door, the police finally shut it down and carted off the crazies. Finally I can come home from work and get a decent nights sleep, because I won't be woken up at 3.00AM by a nutter on the front lawn waving a knife, and shouting about the messages from God being beamed into his head.
And I'm getting a side-order of hope with that relief. Maybe the family that moves in will keep the grass cut, and won't block the carport with their people-mover every morning.
So, I'm (literally) opening the champagne with one hand and (metaphorically) taking noise control off the speed dial, but gloating is a quite a way down the to-do list.
Years ago Russell mentioned that he wanted to keep things 'clubbable', for which I read 'at least civil'. We may disagree vehemently about politics and policy, but I would hope we can still sit down and break bread together.
So, as far as Saturday goes: que sera, sera. Enjoy the steak dinner.

I really do think Democrats getting their gloat on, however understadably, aren't setting the right tone.
Now, this may not be very mature of me. But the Republicans have spent a good eight years steamrollering their crap through despite a generally supine Democratic party, with an upraised finger aimed at the opinion rest of the world.
Craig, while I take your point, what I now want (to paraphrase you), is for the GOP to fuck off into the naughty corner for a couple of decades until they realise what they did wrong and are prepared to apologise. If that means rubbing their noses in it, so be it.

So hoping for an Obama win in Arizona would be mean spirited?
Hell, I'm hoping he takes Alaska.

Had a quick squizz at fox at luchtime. One chap was having a good-ol' toy-throwing freakout about early voting. Just a matter of 'convenience', apparently.
Well, hmmmmm. Vote early, or wait in line for eight hours. Gosh, what a hard choice.

The Guardian has a nice Flash graphic on the front page. Roll over individual states for percentage of the count so far, and how it's splitting between the candidates

Watching a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor ... and surviving?
Nice.....
'course, Kurtz never said which edge of the razor the snail was crawling along.

Does anybody have a perspective on why the American voting process is such an amazing shambles?
Basic (cynical) rule of thumb principle to follow here is: where's the money?
Rich people (republicans) would kick up an almighty stink if they had to wait more than 10 minutes to vote. And it damn well wouldn't be the same four years later, not if the diebold guy wanted his country club membership approved. No sir.
On the other hand, those that are already tending towards a disconnection from the voting process tend to fall into a negative feedback loop where they can't change the system to work more smoothly for them, because they are already disconnected from it. And so on.
Those with the power to change the system (rich people) to help the disconnected, won't actually do so because it runs against their owns interests. For example, why would a bunch of rich white republicans in Florida fix the voting process to help poor black people vote, when to do so would be to effectively hand the state over to the Democrats?
In short, as far as the republicans are concerned: it ain't broke, so why fix it?
