I'm outraged.

I'm so glad you chose to talk about this, Russell. I have talked about it a lot to other people in the last couple of days, and some of the reactions have been stunning. This whole affair is just so wrong on so many levels. To visit violence of such force on a person, and to have no legal consequences for it? Are you kidding me? I'm left fairly speechless by the whole thing tbh. Where do you start? Of course the guy should be fired, of course there should be legal consequence. Bloody hell. And he convinced her to shut up about it - he broke her back, and panicked and it was hushed up. Wrong, wrong, wrong. He bashed the crap out of her, and excuses it in his statement as fatigue, being on medication etc. Wrong, wrong, wrong. It was a mutual agreement he says. More like she was scared shitless of him. Jesus.

Gad, David. I used to love my daddy daughter outings. It wasn't about what we did, it was about the time spent together but by crikey, what a brilliant thing to do for your girl. I took an elective at my school when I was about 16 that had to do with the Justice System, and we went and sat through part of a court case. Fascinating it was. And how extraordinary that Simon Moore took the time to explain it all to the girls and reassure in them like that. A winning way about him, I would say.

I would suggest that if you don't like it, Stephen, then.......you just don't like it. No shame in not liking what everybody else likes, is there? If that were the case, I would be hanging my head from dawn til dusk around here!

Matthew, with all due respect, I would point you in the direction of a thread which I can't be bothered looking for. Anyone? We've all discussed this to death - hence the reference in my post. I apologise if you weren't here to vent your views on the subject, but I've said my piece in that thread, as have others. So you'll excuse me if I don't rejoin that particular fray.

Do NZ cigarette packets have the luridly coloured photos of decaying feet and flesh?
Hell yes -- my response, I'm a depraved nicotine addict who's had skankier looking offal for breakfast. Someone's not bringing their A-game here. :)
Absolutely, Craig. I often wonder what my lungs look like, and then just shrug. After all, I could be a meth addict instead. Now that's horrendous. I've just read Tweak by Nic Sheff, and am just about to finish Beautiful Boy by his father, David. You want horror? Plenty to be found in both those books.
I wonder if it'd be easier now just to ban cigarettes completely.
Where do I begin with this one? I know, I won't. We have, after all, been through a couple of huge discussions around peoples' rights to do what they wish to their bodies, as long as they aren't affecting other people adversely. I have to tell you, Andrew, that when I heard that Niue were looking to ban cigarettes, my immediate thought was "Poor bastards."

I don't watch any of the aforementioned programmes, and I'm still watching telly - my newest must-see is Mad Men on Prime, Sundays, 8.30pm. It's well lush.

Quite, Robyn.

Oooo, you clever, clever girl!

I don't know what a catenary is, nor do I care, for that matter. You pointy headed nerdy boys just have to spoil it all with your discussion of etymology, don't you? Eh? Just leave a great piece of writing alone, would ya????
