  • Speaker: What goes on tour,

It may be hard to understand, Sofie, but this would become a hugely high profile case, and maybe she just isn't ready for that right now. I

It's becoming pretty clear that this woman is not in this for the publicity, or anything else as sordid. And I agree with my PA sisters that this has become a media beatup of the woman this all happened to. It makes me very, very angry and so, so sad that we are in 2008, and what has changed in attitudes to the rape and sexual violation of women? Very little, it would seem. Especially where world-class sportsmen are concerned.

Craig, please please never equate me with kiwibloggers. Never been there, never want to. Maybe I should have qualified my statement. Don't see why I should, however needs must if one is being equated to ranting spittle crusted loonies. So.... it seems to me that far too many people are far too complacent about a change of government. It alarms me that those on the "left" are so willing to see 9 years of relative prosperity and reasonably healthy social policy potentially just go down the toilet because........why? Because 9 years is a long time? Because it's time someone else had a go? Because people are sick of Helen Clark? I don't know how much things will change if a Key led government gets in, because I haven't heard anything about their policy intentions rather than "abolish maori seats" - well, I'm sorry, but that sort of indicates that they'll be chasing the populist vote. And another thing. I'm just distressed, frankly, at how much the MSM seems to drive elections. I may be entirely wrong, but I sense a nation of people giving up a wee bit. I just think that people need to think more about what NZ would look like with Key leading us. And I don't know that people are. I think there's a strong sense of - oh, well, they're all the same, anyway. We don't know that, though, for sure, do we?

NZers need to wake up and understand one thing - there's a lot of shit that will be on unsafe ground after these elections if Key's chaps get in.

People really do feel that Labour do not know what it is like to try and raise a family, drive a car and keep a their heads above water
I think this perception is the real problem for Labour

And a party of business people led by a self made millionaire would know what, exactly, about how "ordinary" people fare? I don't buy this "bloody academics" bullshit. I'd rather have that than accountant, business people, and god forbid, playcentre mummies running our country, as we have had in the past. And as for the world not ending if National get in, and people voting Green because they think Labour is stuffed anyway......

As ever, David, evocative and beautiful prose you write. I feel privileged that we get to read it.

  • Hard News: A little understanding,

I think regularly how lucky we are to have each other.

You sweet, sweet man. What a lovely thing to say. Congratulations to you and your child bride.

And who says being in love isn't a heavenly pop hit?

    Craig, too much.

Really, tears in the eyes, chaps. Nothing like a bit of loved up loving lovely love. And, I might add, isn't it the loveliest thing when you are so in love with someone, at the beginning of it all, that you can't imagine loving them anymore than you already do - only to find many years later that, in fact, you were completely wrong, and you love them more and more as time goes by. Fantastic.

  • Island Life: Hunting Squirrels,

    My five positive thingies are:

1 pay equity for kindergarten teachers
    2 economic stability
3 having a leader who's actually a career politician rather than a businessman or an accountant, or god forbid, an ex playcentre mother
    4 low unemployment
    oh, and did I mention

    5 pay equity?

Ya, I've heard a lot of people say stuff to the effect that Labour's done a good job in government, but it's only fair that that they step aside and let National have their turn now.

I just don't understand why we need to change our government for the sake of change. I don't get it, at all. Fickle, fickle, fickle.

  • Speaker: What goes on tour,

Oh, Jackie. Thank goodness you got out. I had an awful sinking feeling as I started reading your story. I'm so glad you were able to shout and scream and escape. It could so easily have been different.

Do you know Deborah, I've told that story to a number of people over the years, and each time, I have known anew how very fortuitous it was that I got out when I did. I'm reluctant to call it luck because really, I worked reasonably hard for a very short period of time to get out of there. And I'm not one for what ifs. But it still feels lucky to me.

  • Hard News: Travelling Gravely,

Oh, Sofie. No! More, more. Being a dog fanatic, myself, I am always eager to hear about others' pups. Incidentally, and it is somewhat relevant to this topic re police dogs, my dog is a staffie/heeler cross, and a magnificent guard dog. We're not sure why, because she's usually the biggest people slut on earth. But she is what she is. And we were very grateful for that, when one morning she awoke at 3am and barked up a hell of a storm. My husband flicked the curtain, saw a young man trying to break into our car, leapt up and let the dog out the front door, and she promptly chased the young thief down the end of the road. She looks a little staunch apparently - so I'm told. I can never see it myself - and that's why I think police dogs should be used more widely. Never underestimate what criminal types are scared of. It's likely to be dogs IMHO.
