  • Hard News: This is bad – very bad,

    moralising

The No. 1 pastime for those who don't want to do anything.
Plus they think it makes them look important and concerned without doing anything.
A win/win in their echo chamber.

  • Hard News: On benefit fraud, in reply to Rob Stowell,

If it’s not a wealth redistribution system, it’s not working

The main reason to redistribute is, that due to ideologies that gave birth to policies that profited a small section of the population (the already wealthy), and corporations that could work all the angles on tax avoidance, has so distorted our previously social democratic state, it is the best and quickest way to restore something resembling wealth balance in society.
And the dishonourable S Joyce & co can go suck eggs.

Thanks for that info about Pilger Rob.

  • Hard News: On benefit fraud,

usual suspects on the right have leapt on it,

That moral high horse really is getting to be a tired old nag.
The poor thing needs to be put out to pasture, but the bandits who like riding it will still be trying too make moral capital off its ghost, as they send is corpse to the glue factory

  • Hard News: Our own fake news, in reply to Rob Stowell,

Really! I have found his criticism of Israeli policies at times strident and wrong headed but never thought he was an anti Semite.

  • Hard News: Our own fake news, in reply to David Hood,

    From the study

rationality has a bigger impact on shaping (sometimes irrational) beliefs than previously expected, given that in the current communication environment, people are overloaded with emotional messages coming from ads, political and social campaigns.

It was a small cross section of people in Hungary apparently, dont know if that makes a difference.
But people can reason their own way to irrationality it seems. I guess we knew that anyway. But its harder to go the other way. You need others pointing out your BS as well. If they can be bothered I guess!

  • Hard News: Our own fake news,

    Pilger-to-Hitler

Im trying to connect the dots as to how anyone can make that leap. They are polar opposite as far as I'm concerned. So it defeats me.

  • Hard News: Our own fake news,

    remonstrating with people who believe

There's probably been studies done about it Im sure.
getting people to see the error of their ways or changing their mind by providing good counter arguments, facts even, is near impossible.
Im beginning to think this modern iteration of this age old problem is getting to be an insurmountable obstacle.

  • Hard News: How journalism looks now,

    he-said-she-said

To use an overworked word, truth is rarely ever found at the midway point between opposing views. To think it does, reeks of intellectual laziness.

  • Hard News: Barclay and arrogance, in reply to izogi,

    all politicians are untrustworthy.

Most/all of humanity has that gene.
That's why when it comes to governing others, we came up with them pesky checks and balances
