Heard the joke about the London bus driver? An old one. He said to the woman getting on the bus in a skirt on a very windy day, "Airy, isn't it?"
To which she replied, "What did you expect, fevvers?"
It's been a family joke for decades when anyone expresses surprise.

Thanks for the above, Rob. Never been a fan of Dickinson but had never made the effort. I've always liked the title of the below and can't resist adding it. Enough already!:

The first line of the latter was advertising National Poetry Day on a Whangarei Shop window. Cool, eh?

What's the story about short films? Can they be promoted more? "Two Cars One Night" is a gem and I am also very fond of "Tama Tu" - another of Waititi's shorts. I liked them so much that "Boy" was a little bit of a disappointment. I'm a great fan of the late Brad McCann. Has anyone seen his short, "Possum"? It's on the "In My Father's Den" DVD.
"Falling Sparrows" on the "Chunuk Bair" DVD is another treasure.
I think the NZFC can be proud of many of these efforts.
(This is not really all that relevant to the current discussion but I see the short film as a glorious art form - I'm often let down by features.)

I'm being provocative but I always saw the Commission's role as being cultural not commercial. I've gone off hobbits and apes and cheesy heavens.
Didn't the Germans see our film industry as a 'miracle' during the Harley years?

I think there have been many successes over the years of Ruth Harley's governance. OWW, Whalerider, In My Father's Den etc have all been powerful and successful in the NZ context. Florian Habicht's films have been great. I don't necessarily trust Peter Jackson's judgement - he is a commercial filmmaker.

Yes. I think I watch One out of habit and because my husband watches One news and because I'm lazy. That'll learn me.
