I shouldn't watch Close Up, should I? But I did and saw the lamentable "live reading" carried out by Kevin Cruikshank last night. He was "talking to" Samantha Henderson in order to reassure her grieving mother and step-father. At one stage he heard her singing happy birthday and wondered disingenuously whether someone had a birthday. (It was her mother's birthday.) Cruikshank also indicated to the parents that the shooting deemed accidental by the court was actually "with intent"
I thought the parents conducted themselves with some dignity but that it was an horrific piece of television. With a straight face, Sainsbury asked for feedback from viewers: "Do you believe?"
He later read out four responses: two affirming the psychic reading and two critical.
He told us twice that we could read more about the case in next week's New Idea.
I don't know what to think about Close Up's pursuit of Robin Brooke but I know exactly what I think of this latest outrage.

The only novel I can remember that conveyed the hospital experience well was one I read in the 70s: Solzhenitsyn's "Cancer Ward".
Must have a look at it again.

I've been watching this thread and thinking. I've had close dealings with cancer and it really is as awful as it is feared to be - if it gets out of control. Lots of love to you Wendy. I'm so sorry to hear that it was too late for your husband.
I'm really interested in Emma's term "medicalised". After my big cancer in 1996 I was reluctant to set foot in a hospital and went to the doctor only if it was absolutely necessary and even disliked going to a physio. I'd had enough of being a patient. It's a powerless position, perhaps? A cancer counsellor I was talking to recently said that people in hospices will tell the cleaners things they won't tell the nurses. It's a sort of hierarchy thing. Nurses and doctors have power. Patients and cleaners not so much????
I'm also interested in your views on cancer treatment. Hmmm. I've just had two bouts with oral cancer. First time I had minimal treatment. This left some carcinoma in situ near the margins. So of course it came back again last November and now I've had half of my oral tongue removed. My cancer doesn't seem to be very aggressive so the latter treatment might have been over the top. It's very hard for doctors to get the balance right and maybe I should have been a bit more informed in both situations.
I subscribed to the Oral Cancer Foundation in the US. Their website is absolutely brilliant. They advise aggressive treatment (the American way) but they also advocate patient choice and 2nd and 3rd opinions.

Wow! Back home after a rare day's relieving (maths so I had time to think about feminism - I was a mere babysitter) - and all these lovely posts. I liked the Bechdel test and the Joss Whedon speech, Emma. Fantastic.
I was thinking about films - Jane Campion: Bright Star. I love the way Fanny's sewing skills are treated. She makes a virtue of necessity and throws her intelligence and creativity into sewing and fashion. There are lines of dialogue about this woman's work. How rare is that?
The Piano? Hmmm. One of the few films I found truly erotic FWIW.
And Giovanni - you wrote about Rosie the Riveter in your blog. I loved that film and still think about the woman who just wanted to make a beautiful wrought iron gate. She was thwarted by the end of the war and the return of women to the 'home'.

I can't identify with SATC but I did bristle at a Hubbard's View cartoon in the Northern Advocate this afternoon that was based on the Australian football team being dubbed the "Sheilaroos".

And I know you weren't really attacking me/us. And I do feel squeamish about pornographic films. There, I've admitted it. Very unfashionable around here. I've never seen one but I associate them with "the expense of spirit in a waste of shame". No I don't but that line from sonnet 129 (?) always sounded pretty cool to me ... Shakespeare the Puritan.
