Russell: that's a tricky kettle of fish. Where do you draw the line in terms of self-censorship and how do achieve consistency? It would seem the only way to do that is to avoid politics and religion altogether.
Obviously, the reaction to the Mohammed Cartoons was stronger than to say the Chocolate and Piss Christs, but that doesn't seem like a good reason to not print them.
If that was the right reason, Salman Rushdie should not have been allowed to publish the Satanic Verses either.
Be nice if blasphemy and irreverence was protected in law actually.

You're right, I didn't get the joke. Can you warn me in advance before you let off any further such funnies?
-
Hmm, Don, this is going way off the tracks.
I think I know a bit more than you do about Europe and discrimination and can honestly say that it's not the same now as it was a century ago.
You seem to think Finland persecuted the Jews as well, which isn't true.
-
No, I'm not going to stand for rubbish like that. Muslims aren't being persecuted like the Jews were. I really shouldn't have to say this.
-
Errm, I don't think the Jews in the thirties are comparable to the muslims of today, unless you wish to Godwin yourself of course.
As an aside, the Jews had precious few defenders in the thirties. That's kind of why things happened the way they did.

Ah, no... the headhunter misunderstood the directions from Ireland. "Get a t'urd from Farefucks," were the orders, obeyed to a fault.

I don't like it when they bring in skinks and geckos, or birds for that matter (have paid my dues several times over to Sylvia the Bird Lady up in Mairangi Bay) but I really start to worry when they eye up the neighbour's dog to see if it fits through the cat flap...

"Dawter" indeed. Could've forgiven Cook for a story about slipping standards of English amongst Taka Grammar students, but...
-
Oh oh... just spotted this response on ratemyteachers.
-
Those stories and accusing a Takapuna Grammar teacher of being a history revisionist along the lines of David Irving. Funny thing is, her students don't agree that she is a revisionist or a conspiracy theorist at all, as Cook's story says. (Yes, I know, ratemyteachers.co.nz isn't particularly authoritative or anything, but the comments bar one say she's a good teacher.)
This is starting to smell like a major media scandal.
