  • Hard News: Doing anything Thursday?,

I've always been fascinated by Ithaca. It must be a groovy place except when you leave for a holiday it takes ages to find the way back and by the time you finally return only the dog will know who you are.

Also, you have to keep a really sharp eye out when you're doing your ploughing.

Ok, now I am jealous. Ithaca PAS drinkies tonight, my place. Come on over. You'll recognize it easily - it's the one that Nabokov never lived in/lived near/visited.

As for other meanings for "teabag". Just goes to show you who the perverts are. Normal people don't do that kind of crap and so don't know of the other meanings.

    It's knowledge, bro.

  • Hard News: For Good Friday,

I was going to comment that I'd never had any religious education in school, but I realised I did.

To the best of my recollection, my class spent the entire Std 3 year worth of RE lessons learning to sing Lord of the Dance. At least once the instructor (a local vicar) brought in a tape of other children to show us how it was done.

  • Hard News: For Good Friday,

I suspect that most of the people who are becoming 'non-religious' are actually just getting high on crystals and chakra. That doesn't seem to be much of an improvement to me.

I suppose it's an improvement to the extent that chakras don't go round telling you to kill infidels and crystals don't have opinions about civil rights for gay people.

There is a line, like most things. It's hard to see how having lots of crystals in your house could be a problem (except for the dusting). It's pretty easy to see how substituting crystal healing for a trip to the doctor could go terribly wrong.

  • Up Front: Keeping it Weird: A Night Out…,

In Chch, the question sort of gets thrown down the way someone with flair and class might throw down a gauntlet. Reaction will be based on the answer.

Ugh. I don't suppose innocently answering "Canterbury" works?

Wait, you aren't allowed to ask where people went to school (in cases where they are from somewhere big enough to have more than one) to help narrow the probable pool of people you know in common?

    Oops.

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

Isn't this going to be the next big challenge, the rise of bigger and bigger power demands of people's entertainment? Should we slap energy standards on home electronics like that? Think of all the xboxs and so one too...

Yeah. I, uh, have this friend who kept their PS2 when they got a PS3 because they did measurements and found that the latter sucked way more power. So wherever possible, the PS2 gets used.

  • Hard News: Problems,

What genre is Iain Banks "Song of Stone" (for those who've ploughed through it?).

    Snuff porn?

  • Hard News: Problems,

I don't really see how it is surprising/bad that people are more likely to discuss with reference to cultural artifacts they have in common than, well, whatever the alternative is.

We could be sitting around in 18th century Dublin talking about all the resonances in that one piece that guy Swift wrote - the people who had read it would have common ground, the people who didn't might sit out or go off and get a copy or complain about how we should be discussing something Properly Worthy like Herodotus.

All of this has happened before and will happen again.
