  • Hard News: Old Friends,

That Kevin Smith music sounded great. Homerecording indy stuff was a diferent game before pro-tools. Loose as heck drums, I love it!

I've been wondering about the Warners dispute, they certainly don't ask us to take videos, in fact they post them on the Flying Nun myspace page. I just feel that music videos are ads and the more people that see them the better.

  • Hard News: Play Time,

    i love Ze Frank. Genius.

I also love Cassette, Flight Of The Conchords and Michel Gondry...but who doesn't love ole Gondry eh?

TPF played a gig where Mr Gondry was in the audience (it was an Eagle Vs Shark thing)...while we were packing up our gear we were going "was that guy from Wellington", until Luke realised who it was. Then we got shy. Then he left.

Umm ok thats my lame name drop of the week. i saw a guy.

  • Hard News: Blackout Bingo!,

Just downloaded Copywrong Remix Kit. joy.

Has anyone here played with Microsoft Songsmith? That is a whole new world of copyright nothingness. Music that makes it self. It is a truly awful program that my band is hoping to use to make an EP, if the mint chicks don't beat us to it....

  • Hard News: The Public Bad,

Copyright incomes from synchronisation rights, performance rights and publishing are fine. Selling stuff is harder -- but that's in part because other forms of deriving money from the ownership of music copyrights have flourished.

...and APRA and licensing is pretty much the way every musician I know makes money off there music. It seems very clearly that it's the record companies and not the artists that are freaked out by downloading. Musicians are such egotists that people not downloading their music is a nightmare. 'They don't love me?'

  • Hard News: The Public Bad,

it is quite simply the infringement of copyright that makes the internet good.

This law is supposed to protect musicians and the like, but find me a musician who doesn't enjoy the occasional bootleg....

Take 'Vader Sessions' or the Titanic 2 preview off youtube and might as well give up on life.

I don't think this argument is as simple as 'some people who are not that naughty may be punished'. I want rights for the really naughty awesome people who make cool things for no financial gain of their own out of other peoples stuff!

  • Hard News: Emma Hart is a werewolf,

this is all rather exciting. I didn't know what twitter was until about a week ago. Hmmm I still don't quite get it.

    Still though, I'll protest anything.

  • Hard News: Debacles and Disgraces,

That is good news on the iTunes thing.

I used to claim that I couldn't hear the difference between a decent AAC and a .wav file but actually that was rubbish. No form of digital compression sounds as good as full audio. And as for like 128 mp3s, eeek they are disgusting.

I recently drove through a good chunk of california listening to digital radio. Okay so its its quite fun having all those specialist stations, but they sound terrible. What I'm not sure about is wether sirius and xm just play all their music off some whack mp3 database or if the digital broadcast medium involve some crazy digital compression. Bad anyway.

Most albums that i have purchased recently (on vinyl) have come with free downloads. The great thing is that all of these downloads have been zip folders with full audio .wav files. Then you can import them into itunes and choose to keep as big proper files or compress them at your leisure. Of course these are from small record companies who probably don't see much return from iTunes anyway.

...the finance company stuff is depressing to comment on...

  • Hard News: Radio Times,

...by the way, I had to listen to talk back everyday as I was working with a builder. It was #$%@^&%&@ awful. New Zealand has some issues man.

  • Hard News: Radio Times,

Would Bill Ralston broadcast live from Camp Low Hum?

I listen to RNZ every day. I especially like Morning Report (if I'm up that early) or Nights with Brian Crump (if I'm up that late).

Katherine Ryan has gone from strength to strength in her slot I think.

The music coverage is better than ANY station in New Zealand. Sam Wicks is an extraordinary asset to the station I think. As is Kirsten Johnston and Nick Bollinger. The RNZ music people are way more in touch with whats happening in the NZ music world than any commercial station. I think they are quicker to seek out new trends in music than the Bnet and re-discovering old classics. They got me into the late Karen Dalton before Mojo/UNCUT etc started fussing over her.

Afternoons can be a bit dull sometimes. The panel is usually awful. But both Noelle and Jim are pleasant and intelligent hosts but the format is a bit stagnant. I can not stand the greatest song ever written.

I don't really know what Bill is talking about. In fact neither does he. When he was doing talkback a few years ago I had to listen to him every day. The bigoted dribble he would tolerate from callers was unbelievable.

I am grumpy about this now! I love Aunty Beeb!
