I have to say this forum is fairly nostalgic of nzmusic.com circa 2003.
NZONAIR have not sealed the deal with commercial radio but that is surely down to stubborn programmers. If you look at the variety of music that has been funded over the years there is a great deal of cool music that has had the chance to make videos. $5000 might seem shit to the people who have moved on from music vids to advertising but you can actually achieve quite a lot with it if its all you have got or if your in the position to supplement it then do so.
I have always been annoyed with Phoenix Foundation songs have been relegated to the 'Indie Hit Disk' but in recent times we have been on the 'Kiwi Hit Disk' and that hasn't made a great deal of difference. Having a major record label behind us has achieved occasional plays on the Rock and ZM but nothing approaching being playlisted.
I am really grateful to have had the support of Brendan and his team (and lets not forget this organisation isn't one guy making decisions in an ivory tower smoking crack with the feelers or something) but the only thing that will get new interesting music on commercial radio is a severe cultural shift in the boards and audiences of the two companies that dominate so much of NZ radio.
so Mr Robbery my point isn't that I think NZONAIR is a great success story but that I don't think they are the problem.
I used to get furious that we never got funding from NZONAIR but now I would be a total hypocrite to diss them. So I guess my opinions are pretty compromised anyway! One thing I will say is that NZONAIR seemed to create a real boost in the broadcast of New Zealand music videos but this is dieing a little with the heinous drift of Music channels turning into tennage reality TV channels. I am an old grumpus.
As for the internet I don't really see the need for a govt body to help any creative pursuits in that area. It is so easy that if your not doing you just haven't tried.
Any band today needs;
a youtube channel
a myspace page
a facebook page (for gig invites etc)
a Last Fm account
A flckr account (so you can upload flyers to create links to)
....a DATABASE!!!!.... to get emails off people at gigs etc. This is the most valuable piece of marketing any band can have these days.If there is a manager in NZ who can't work out how to do any of the above from just going the sites and following instructions then how are they gonna do monthly GST returns when the cash starts flowing in?
In terms of Blogs....umm google search "nz music blog", email people info, done.
my posts are long, they make not great sense.

I really don't think Brendan is influenced by big business. The guy is pretty on to it and has always been quite forthcoming in explaining how NZONAIR walks a tightrope of following govt policy.
NZONAIR is not causing any problems for the NZ music industry. Its helping some people, its not helping others...thats not really fair but its the way it is. We made three videos for our first record without NZONAIR funding and they all got air play and exposure to some degree. Our most played vid to date wasn't NZONAIR funded. I think people need to opt for self motivated alternatives to funding and hope that these things will show you deserve the money in the future which of course makes things much easier.
I do think there is a serious lack of NZ music on radio. Outside of the Bnet, National and Kiwi its pretty much a desert unless you make music that fits a strict format of dull shame.
It has become fairly blatant that the Internet is the new taste-maker for music and has an impact on the 'word of mouth' sales that get such amazing artists as Lawrence Arabia or The Ruby Suns out there to a certain degree. But these sort of artists (good ones...like say Phelps and Munro, Cassette, David Kilgour, SJD, Dimmer, Conan Moccasin) should be getting a financial cut of the commercial radio pie.
I suspect the money getting paid through NZ commercial radio to APRA that goes straight overseas would be massive. It would good to see a little more of that going to the pockets of NZ artists.

I always borrow my dads Bose headphones and although the noise canceling is great sometimes they make me feel like my ears are going to explode.
The current in flight system on Air NZ long haul seems fine to me. Certainly miles better than any other air line i have flown...but i haven't flown Singapore.
The thing i would love to see on long haul flights would be AC power and ethernet cables at all seats......and soy lattes.

I ate a whole lot of unpasturised Stilton and i did feel a little odd.
Parsley can trip you out a bit, as can cough syrup of course. Cough syrups I have not taken but I have spent an evening with a man who drank two bottles. He went insane and wanted to have an orgy. Unluckily for him we were all completely sober and un-cough syruped so there was zero to no sexiness. Boy, he was having a good time in his head though.
The great thing about banning all these drugs is the ridiculous abundance of 'gold top' mushrooms freely available in and around parliament between march and may of every year. Look out for trench coat wearing BA students out side the reserve bank at 7am on a Monday morning. They're not searching the shrubberies for inflation figures.

That 'p' 4 square story felt quite CNNNN (an ABC news spoof). It wasn't great journalism and I actually felt sorry for that dairy owner but he was so stupid. To be fair to TV One I think we should be monitoring the sale of iso and other such chemicals. Anything to reduce the amount of that insidious drug on the steets.
I'm usually all for legalisation and freedom of choice etc but P is pretty shit.
As for Salvia, well no one ever seems to want to do it more more than twice and its a hell of a lot less freaky than herbals. Its just abut the most harmless way one can experience something akin to LSD. If your gonna ban it you might as well ban nutmeg at the same time. Or canned whipped cream.

What a yucky strange man Mr Laws is.
I'm ranting, raving lunatic with paranoia that our major newspaper publishers are trying kill me (Russ will attest to my freakouts) so this just further cements my fear that New Zealanders have gone mad.
The 'broken window', zero tolerance policy that Guliani (himself a very strange man who now profits off fear....he's like some terror threat consultant) introduced were brought in to a city with outrageous crime levels. It doesn't matter if they worked or if the downturn in crime was caused by other economic factors, New Zealand simply isn't a crack house crammed hell whole of homeless junkies stealing your grandma's purse.
I noticed in the Dom P today that there was another doom and gloom article about house prices. The ridiculous thing was the stats showed that house prices are actual up on this time last year.
PANIC!!!!!
15 year old 'ethnic' children are spraying my mortgage with gansta rappings.
I think tagging is much less ugly than say 60% of the post war buildings in Wellington. Or say 100% of the houses in churton park.
Give taggers a break. What else are kids who can only afford two glasses of milk a day gonna do? I mean if this was the good old days they 'd just be sitting around putting on eyeliner and drinking milk non-stop.
.....eee gads, and the Austrian dungeon reference.

i really shouldn't say such things.

Shihad are like the all blacks....
Consider Killjoy to be the 87 world cup. A brilliant coming of age. A gauntlet of national pride!
and every album since is maybe a little bit more disapointing than the last....but in the periods between world cups one can see the Shihad Blacks devastating all in their path at stadiums up and down the country.
Honestly I have a lot of respect for the Had. they are hugely inspiring. They are truly unmatched live. But on record not so reliable me thinks.

Ah yes, the weather has inclement tendencies to say the least. However it has been the best summer in living memory.
The one thing that annoys me about my home town, and this is very picky, the distinct lack of iced coffee. Real watery American style iced coffee. Its and essential summer beverage.
So aside from wind and an excess of espresso snobbery Wellington is perfect. We have three bowling alleys after all.
