  • Hard News: What Now?,

I object to an idiot taking antique door knobs.

So would I in normal circumstances but something made me stop; door knobs when all that is going on around you? This morning we find out why.

Abandoning a site damaged in anger and hatred (Nazi Germany was not bombed out of love) comes much easier than abandoning a site damaged by an act that many within the Church will call a random act of nature that carries no particular Godly message.

Which explains the bombed out church in Liverpool. I understand this dates from the war, and acts as a kind of memorial.

There can be no room for mediocrity.

Too late. Mr Key has already said it will take 5 - 10 years to rebuild and around $10b or so. I won't quibble the money, but I seriously suggest Key take a deep breath and ask, what does one get in say 7 years if not mediocrity?

Christchurch, as a city, took 150 years to be built and it will take another 150 years to be rebuilt. City building isn't an off-the peg exercise as some are wont to think.

Somebody please tell me I’m right about this.

Didn't the police this morning revise the numbers of missing to 50? So, that's gone 150 down from 200 to 50, but the body count is 147...

  • OnPoint: On Price Gouging,

I'm left wondering how Mr Crampton responded to the 6.3 aftershock/quake with a force of 1.9g's. Did he abandon his homo econmis in favour of drawing on, and contributing to social capital, or was he resolute in applying "rational" economics to the situations he found himself in?

  • Up Front: Ups and Downs. And Side-to-Sides.,

I would like to suggest people doing ones and twos in the garden in a improvised hole in the ground could perhaps do a google search of humanure and just kinda get up to play with the nuances of well, shit in your garden...

Indeed. It’s worth noting that this site is archived by the National Library, so stories told here will be collected there for people to read in decades to come.

Thanks for letting us know; I’ll have to a) up my arguing style and b) refrain from swearing. Lest my descendents think I’m stupid and uncouth.

The first rule of the internet is that you can’t count anything being deleted from the internet.

Ahhh, but I was working on the assumption that my innane witterings will be lost amongst billions of other sorts of innane (and brilliant) witterings, but the involvement of the NatLib dramatically changes things.

And like others, I was mentally shifted sideways as well this week. The images, TV, papers etc. Which naturally enough prompts thoughts of how to survive something similar in your home town – in my case Auckland. I asked my nephew (who works sorta in this area) the risk of earthquake in Auckland; low he said. More chance of volcano popping up somewhere. At least there’s several days warning with that, hopefully.

Right, off to sort out a emergency box….

Listen - this sound a bit silly - but there's this guy, Steven Cowan - he writes a blog - I haven't seen the blog updated since he last wrote on Tuesday, presumably before the quake struck. I emailed him - but no reply as of yet.

I've never met him but I enjoy his take on life, and I'm slightly worried. I think he lives in the eastern suburbs, but my knowledge of Christchurch geography would fit in a thimble. I've used that google person finder but there's nothing there. It might just be me, but I am worried. Does anyone know him?

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Ross Mason,

Yes, well. Wearing my ER hat, I did think this morning of the buildings around Auckland. And didn't like what I thought so I stopped. But we must, absolutely must, confront the risk and possibilities of a serious natural energy releasing event in Auckland. Slipping off said hat.

  • Muse: OPEN THREAD: Voices from Christchurch,

Ahh I did wonder why the 'Council building foyer' looked a bit odd - I couldn't think of a less 'council' looking foyer yet I couldn't think what building it was...

Heh - no. My brother in the wheelchair listens for me, I walk for him, and we both see for our other blind brother. :)

  • Muse: Shelf Life: The Dying Elephant in…, in reply to Lucy Stewart,

The Tech Books store on Broadway in Newmarket is a good 'indie' store that's entirely focussed on technical books. Prices are well, sticker shock, but I suppose if you really want that in-depth technical book about baking bread, or repairing your 1970 Marino, you'll pay, as you'll mostly get your money's worth out of it.

They do have sales from time to time, so it's worth keeping an eye out for these.
