Actually, I believe Holmes was misquoted. He meant to say "I don't like paying taxes. Because of them I can't afford to buy 'Civilisation.' (TM)"

Wasn't Roger Douglas in a left-wing party? Doesn't he still claim to be a socialist in some sense? I'm confused.

...Wishartian undercurrent of Elders of Zion-esque conspiracism...
I just wanted to make sure that sentence fragment stood out; it's quite beautiful.

And, and let me stress the "and!" here, that just because some politicians might well be using Anthropogenic Climate Change to promote their causes, this doesn't mean that Anthropogenic Climate Change isn't happening. Anthropogenic Climate Change is a thesis in the Sciences, not politics.

A lot of the problems in the West can, James. Not all, but a lot.

Communism, Steve, communism.

Yes, James, it would be terrible to damage our economy[1] just to save future generations from environmental catastrophe.
1. Except, of course, we don't have to damage the economy to do that. We just have to hit those efficiencies we were told the market would provide us with anyway.

I've been saying for a while now that Trotter seems to have found himself a niche; he's a social conservative that the Right like to point at and say "Look, some people on the Left do share our prejudices." The worrying thing is that people who claim to be leftish and you would think could know better, think that Trotter is, somehow, the voice of reasonable debate on the Left.
I'm genuinely curious as to whether Chris really does think his straight male Pakeha-priviliging brand of social conservatism really is what the Left should be about. As far as I can see, in Aotearoa/Te Wai Pounamu, straight Pakeha males are doing really well and don't really need any advocacy whatsoever.

This is why I often think the cock-up theory of history is more plausible than the conspiracy theory alternative. I've met Vincent Gray; he really does believe that Anthropogenic Climate Change is a fraud put upon us by Socialists. I knew Augie Auer when he was alive and a parishioner at the church I used to attend, and he was quite sincere; these are not Machiavellian men seeking to do wrong. No, what they are are piss-poor scientists (in the field of Climatology) who, having failed at the game of arguing in the peer-reviewed literature, think that persuading the public to believe them will grant them their victory anyway.
That being said, Leyland seems like he might be trying to be the Kissinger of the group. Now there is a man who exemplifies the conspiracy theory of history.

Climate Change Denial does seem to be ACT's Lysenkoism.
I was once asked, by someone attached to Rodney Hide, if I'd like to talk to him about Popper (who, apparently, he admires, although I've not yet seen that admiration come out in his ability to talk about science) and the doctrine of Falsificationism. I turned down the opportunity, mostly because I didn't want to do work for the ACT Party. Now I wish I hadn't. It'd be great to know exactly what Hide thinks privately about how science is done and the (if any) difference in his public attitude.
