That's not up to your usual standard, although I expect you were being a little ironic?

Not at all. And I was quoting more or less verbatim from PJ O'Rourke, who ought to know.

The nation voted Tory. That means I have to put up with that decision.

Well, I suppose you have a point. The producers of Morning Report must agree with you since they got "our" Rob Hosking and Fran O' to provide balanced commentary just now. You wouldn't want to have anything more balanced than that since hey, National won the election.

Loved how Fran checked herself from saying that the budget was going to provide the greater benefits to the few and changed it on the fly to "especially... across the board".

However, just to bring it back to the real world for a minute: I'm on the board of the local school and have a child with a disability who just had to wait a year-plus to get on to the child development team at the local DHB and who's seeing the few services she receives slashed due to special education teams being considered 'non front line'. She gets less therapy so that Rob and Fran can save more money. Am I supposed to be happy? Yeah, but no thanks.

Oh and Craig, right back at you - in fact, fuck right off.

  • Radiation: Lost on Internet Island,

I hope you realise that by mentioning Lost in the title of your post meant I didn't read it.

Don't worry, there are no spoilers in Fiona's post. Apart from the thing about the giant bar of soap - but that's like so obvious.

It seems like you think most people are really venal, but I'm not sure that they are. At least I'm not.

It's a core conservative belief: that all people are bastards. Of course if you happen to be a bastard it's probably something of a consolation. At any rate, it's not a matter of being venal. You don't need to be a genius to work out that the money you pay out of your taxes goes to pay for public services that you use, makes your community safer and generally does things that end up benefiting you personally as well as your fellow citizens on lower incomes.

So, what Julie is really saying is that since she wants to pay more tax, everyone else has to as well?

No, she's saying that she reckons that people in her tax bracket *ought to* pay more tax. Not that hard a concept to grasp, I would have thought.

I've got to say, if you decide against having more children because they might cut the education subsidy, it's because you didn't want more children in the first place. I mean c'mon!

(And since our media mistake "being fair and balanced" with "having no historical memory" the electorate needs to go through an injection of these policies every decade or so. Until they go - ah, yes, that's why we rejected them last time around!)

But it works: you erode the tax base, which forces the introduction of user-pay measures, which erodes public services, which make people less collectively invested in their quality, which further erodes public services, until the government is so small you can fit it in your pocket. The bits you haven't already sold to your campaign contributors, I mean.

+1 on wanting to be kindly pointed to the glamourisation of puking.

a top threshold of say $150,000 with a 38% rate would have taken care of the borrowing

You want somebody who earns* over 150k to pay five more cents in every dollar earned above that bare subsistence amount? You monster!

*(that's got to be a term used quite loosely when you're that rich)
