  • Hard News: What we have really lost,

I feel about 10 times as informed for about one third of the effort that I've had to put in reading the papers about this debacle.

    What he said.

Is the reason that he gets sinecures as "left commentator' by business periodicals because he makes the 'left' look neanderthal and solely focused on his idiosyncratic take on Class Politics?

    Bingo.

I think you also need to be commended for not falling asleep in the presence of Chris Laidlaw.

(That's assuming you actually didn't fall asleep at any point during the discussion.)

Just to square that particular circle, seeing as both are mentioned in the thread, China Mieville on the aesthetics of CGI and Avatar.

    Que sera sera.

Film critics. They'll put Hitchcock quotations everywhere.

Speaking of, Philip also recently put us all on to the mp3 stash of Hitchcock's conversations with Truffaut. One of my finds of 2010 so far.

  • Field Theory: American Gods,

NHL spoilers ahoy. Kyle, look away.

Also I can't help but feel that hockey would get a lot more viewers if it didn't schedule its playoffs at the same time as the more popular NBA.

So here's what just happened in the NHL. The Philadelphia Flyers had gone down three-nil in a best of seven series against the Boston Bruins, something that only two teams had come back from in the last century. They won three in a row to draw the series level. Then in the deciding game, in Boston, they went down 3-0 in the first period. They won the game and the series 4-3.

I just finished watching it on the sensationally named Web channel IraqGoals.tv.

  • Up Front: The Up Front Guide: Dressing…,

I do have to have a slight word with the guy on the subway. Please don't curl your covers around like that. Have some respect for the book as an object.

How about everyone gets to do what they want with their books?

A friend once picked up a book of mine she was going to borrow and expressed her shock at dismay at the fact that I had folded some of the page corners. Needless to say, she didnt' get to borrow the book.

That's what we did too. We paid cash for our house, and at the same time borrowed 300 grand from the bank to cover our living expenses over the following several years.

  • 2010: The Cultural YTD,

Today's response from Air New Zealand to a Listener editorial (flagged in full-page ads in the papers) is brilliant:

Oh, thank you_ for that. I love that they used their taxing music as the soundtrack - I could almost smell the fumigant.

Looking back on 2009, I do find it a little disturbing that Susan Boyle's I Dreamed a Dream was the best-selling global record in 2009, shifting some 8.3 million units. A triumph of middle-brow culture?

Speaking of Boy, would it be too impolitic to express a little less than unfettered enthusiasm at Poi E threatening to become the song of 2010?

At the cost of repeating myself: they're not questions, it's a petition. And dishonestly run, as you note. Has The Standard written all over it, now that you mention it.
