  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine, in reply to Trevor Nicholls,

"small but perfectly formed" was the way Private Eye mocked Donald Trelford, editor of the Observer from 1975, whenever it referred to him (which was practically every issue while I was in the UK through the 1980s).

Yes, many of The Ferret's catchphrases in Metro were verbatim from Private Eye.

Am I alone in taking that as a "purging all who dare take issue with anything I say" response?

No, it appears they actually had nearly 50% fake followers, very suddenly.

Thanks, Sacha. I got a nice e-mail from Chris, and I'm fine with leaving it at that.

    I've deleted that derail.

    Guys, think about it.

Okay, I do not understand this at all. Scout's official Twitter account is locked. Why would you do that?

It also appears that they're culling followers – like 200 down in the past hour. This is just weird.

Update: The account is unlocked again, with the explanation that they're trying to get rid of fake followers.

So .... what does it say if shallow recycled entertainment news is popular in NZ?

    It's popular everywhere.

That's why Stuff and the Herald website run it right throughout the day and why the Daily Mail's "sidebar of shame" exists.

The thing is really whether Scout is doing it well and whether it adds enough value. After all, modestly-paid online editors are throwing this stuff onto competing websites the moment it comes off the wire.

The decision to lead with a Judith Collins interview today really shows how limited Glucina's reach is. She's trying to establish the few people she actually has an in with as celebrities.

It's clear there's not going to be much pretence here. It's nakedly National. Unashamedly gutter. Happily shallow. Whalefluff?

I think it also shows how limited Glucina's reach is.

Story just did a puff piece promoting National Party spin doctor Bill Ralston as a candidate for the Auckland City Council next year.

This morning's lead is a puff piece on Judith Collins.

How do Mediaworks' bosses feel about her using their new toy to promote nonsense gossip about their main competitor's star attraction? Just asking...

Yes, that really surprised me. I don't see how that works for Mediaworks.

There’s a serious undertone, I thought. I get the sense Mediaworks news staff are pretty deeply unhappy. I’d be surprised if Jennings doesn’t feel extremely queasy about ‘Scout’.

I'd be very surprised, especially if Damian Christie's right about the 6pm news being preceded by five minutes of Scout content.

There’s an ‘End of Days’ feel about TV3 at the moment. Unlike Christie and Weldon, I think Jennings has the character to go down with the ship.

You know, for years, Jennings ran a newsroom where hardly anyone left, even for better money. Look at what's happening now.

I've even heard horror stories about management from inside the marquee event productions. Weldon and Christie are burning the place down in pursuit of their bonuses.

But let us not forget that a lot of good people still work there and are doing their best to do good work. Bomber slapping himself on the back because his thinks his boycott is working is a pretty tragic sight.

I think you'll find it's Frances Cook, who was female last time I talked with her.

I think you'll find it's Francis Cook, who was male last time I looked at his photograph.

Although you're not the only one to be confused about this.
