  • Muse: Reel Life: Pliéing Turkey,

Ah, The Red Shoes - lost Best Film to Olivier's Hamlet.

So if not Portman, who would pick Craig?:

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
    Nominees:
Annette Bening for The Kids Are All Right (2010)

Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole (2010)

Jennifer Lawrence for Winter's Bone (2010)

Natalie Portman for Black Swan (2010)

Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine (2010)

Winter's Bone was great but I've not seen Blue Valentine and Rabbit Hole.

  • Random Play: The dawning of the Age of Precarious,

It is set in what is the now standard world for science fiction writers, that post-apocalypse future

A trend I'm impatient to end. I much prefer thorough world-building as long as an author doesn't indulge in details for details sake.

I'm sure many couldn't give a toss about what is happening in Egypt

Thankfully I've found the opposite to be the case.

  • Field Theory: An important message for…,

There's exceptions to this rule though, Netball being the obvious

I contine to believe that as Sky absorbed male sports TVNZ needed something to programme and netball became free to air. I'd love to be disabused but only remember international test consistently covered prior to Sky dominating the market.

Womens Black Sticks are playing tonight at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga against South Korea.

Can we please keep this thread alive with more like this?

  • Up Front: Say When,

    Warning - Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
    And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple

  • Muse: Linky Love,

I can't decide whether US Being Human has missed the mark or is just going to be different

And the US producers of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) declare

The version we're proposing is quite different in tone and content from the original. We also have a new title in mind

so... take out all the good then?

  • Muse: The High Aesthetic Line,

Great Craig. I've been spotting your byline with comments on some international sites I visit (but don't comment) and am happy to read your unexpurgated opinion any day.

  • Up Front: Giving Me Grief,

It's like I carry your death around inside me, and it is so heavy. Don't worry, it's not like I'm sad all the time, or I cry, or I think about it all the time. I'm just always aware of it. I'm still working out how to live my life carrying it.

So damn true. Thank you for putting words to the music.

I don't understand how we try to make ourselves seem reasonable by demonizing each other

reader comment at the WashPost says it as simply as I'd wish.
