  • Hard News: Nasty,

    this would be me

I like MMP - I like that people like Nandor and Sue Bradford can stroll the corridors of power with all the others. And the joy about being partisan? You always know who your party vote will be for. Fickle, I am not.

  • Hard News: Nasty,

I get rather impatient with the nostalgic mythology that New Zealand was some kind of Eden before the 1984 general election.

I certainly would not suggest that, Craig.

  • Hard News: Nasty,

I should have said, Craig, were you directly affected? The late 80's - whilst being spectacular for me, personally, in terms of sex and drugs etc etc and fantastic, globally, for music and fab hair and wondrous outfitting, were bloody shitty and drab times economy wise, everywhere in the world. A lot of people were hurting. I spent all of 87 and 88 in the UK - GRIM - back to NZ for three months - GRIM - back to the UK for 89 and Switzerland in 90 and then back here - GRIM - where I have remained ever since. Fascinating I hear you say. Well, let me tell you, everything that Wesley and Trotter says is true. Bastards sucked the life out of the world, IMHO. Please, please, please do not let them do it again. Because if National win the election this time, I am once again personally affected. Why? Because Mallard's generosity to Kindergarten teachers is about to be pissed all over, once again IMHO.

  • Hard News: Nasty,

some of us don't actually think the Fourth Labour Government was the parliamentary equivalent of a slasher flick.

    Were you there, Craig?

  • Cracker: Get it Off,

quote>In the early 80s the Auckland Uni engineers were preparing to set forth in their grass skirts when they received an unexpected visit from some real Maori, who subjected them to a short sharp consciousness-raising session that put an abrupt end to the tradition. </quote> Oh god, I wonder if they still do that stupid beer floe thing. I have to admit to being one of the organisers of Orientation 1983 - and because I was responsible for the beer floe, they made me an honorary engineer. Apparently, I was a good bloke. Charming.

I knew there was a reason I liked you. But if you want to change your mind about some modern stuff, I've got some good recommendations, Deborah.

I don't think all women take it for granted, Kowhai. I have to say that it gratifies me greatly to be a member of PA where there is a wonderful representation of intelligent, thinking women. Some young, some not so, who stand up for themselves and know what the word "assertive" really means. And a fairly large, if somewhat brainy and worthy sometimes, cast of men who respect the women in their lives. I love reading all the contributions of women such as yourself, Anjum, Deborah, Danielle, Heather, Joanna and others who spend alot of time really thinking about life, and asking questions. Makes me feel a bit more erudite by association, I must say!

  • Southerly: In Praise of Arthur,

How funny, Ian, that you should talk about Cuba St. In the paper this morning, there's a lovely article all about Cuba St by Grant Smithies. I went to Marsden and spent a lot of time wandering up and down Cuba St as a teenager. It was a delight to get back to Wellington in the last couple of years, after 26 years away, and see that it hadn't lost it's charms.

I should add, it's not the power that women have gained which irks me, obviously. It's the complacency with which it's existence is viewed which does. Things can slip away very quickly when you're not looking.
