  • Southerly: In Praise of Arthur,

You poor buggers - I'm going to be all smug and say that I go to Peggy and Flint at Zulu in Ponsonby Rd. After years of changing hairdresser every few years, I've finally found the right ones. They're fabulous, and I love them. They don't do colour, there's only the two of them, there's no fancy head massage or other effects, they don't sell product (imagine my surprise the first time I went, when Peggy was washing my hair and I asked her what she would use if she were me. " Oh, just Tresemme from the supermarket" - marvellous), and it's $85 for a cut.

  • Hard News: The meaning of a Banana,

Even though we're not all that different, we get an increased sense of not actually being European. Well I did

absolutely Russell. I suffered from culture shock something terrible when I first got there. I was completely surprised by how "other" it was. Although, now, I find the States very, very foreign and other.

  • Hard News: The meaning of a Banana,

well as far as i'm concerned, culture is a living and changing thing; traditions were put in place for a reason and if that reason is no longer valid, then the tradition isn't either. and everyone has the right to rebel.

bravo, anjum, bravo. Be it ethnic, national, family, or personal, I believe the very definition of culture is that it is dynamic and everchanging.

  • Random Play: The Cure -- for what ails you,

Reading the Dylan review, I was just thinking how spoiled we've become. If it doesn't sound as good as, or better than, a bought one, we have a moan. It was Dylan for godssake. He came here, he's a legend, we're lucky. Time was, he wouldn't have come at all. God, I remember seeing Don McGlashan not that long ago at the St James - the sound right up the front was LOUD, but it didn't matter, it was Don McGlashan. I was happy just to bathe in his loveliness.

Ew. Ew, ew, ew. I used to think he added colour to the cityscape. After that story, I just think "ew".

  • Hard News: Evil,

This is Russell's patch of virtual real estate, he's liable for the contents and has been pretty clear about the tone he wants to set

    Well said, Craig.

Thanks for the Green Wing vid, Andrew. I can't think of many telly programs that got me laughing out loud so much in recent years.

  • Hard News: Evil,

The whole Louise Nicholas case saddens me, and many other women, for one reason alone. She stood up and said that what happened to her was not right. She went through all the correct channels, a number of times, to be heard. She did what very few women who have been raped are able to do, and that is to pursue her justice. She did this, not once, but several times, and each time was told that she had lied. And now, it turns out that the policeman in charge of the case was bent. I would argue that the entire case needs to be retried, if Ms Nicholas has the stomach for it. And who would blame her, if she did not? Thank you Russell for your posting today. Evil is not amongst us, it is of us.

  • Hard News: Feckless Solutions,

You are aware that most contemporary research on child development says that children growing up exposed only to their parents and a small circle of their friends children is significantly less developmentally healthy than kids who spend time in creches and preschool, right?

    Obviously not.

And as a teacher in the early childhood sector, obviously I am aware of that research, as I am of all research in this area. I should have specified - babies who are in childcare centres all day, every day. Not a major point in this particular discussion about child abuse.

Even if there wasn't research around it, I think it would be obvious to anyone who's spent a non-trivial amount of time looking after kids to grasp that even one kid can easily burn through the energy available to an adult tethered to the hearth.

Once again, obviously, as a teacher of 90 people under the age of five, everyday, you won't be getting any argument about that from me.
