  • Hard News: In the Music,

I'm a bit worried about the "auntie jackie" comment, robbery. Are you meaning I'm really your auntie, or are you speaking metaphorically? I'm only asking because I have a lot of nieces and nephews, some of whom are in the music bizzo, so it wouldn't be entirely unlikely if you were. Either way, if you're related to me, what would Grandad say? And if you aren't, what would YOUR grandad say about the way you are speaking to people?

  • Hard News: Brimful on the 45,

Happy, happy birthday Russell. I'm still just in the 39-44 age group thingy so I'm well happy with that survey. And computers.........refused to touch them until 1994. Told my husband I'd rather read a book, and then he got us the Interweb connection, and I got online, and the rest is history. Some of you have had computers for yonks - I feel okay about not understanding much of what is said around here, now. :-D

  • Hard News: In the Music,

That's rich coming from someone who makes his living from wingeing

I have no idea what calling "theatre" really means but I think that comment deserves a "theatre" call, robbery, don't you? Being paid to voice your opinion and share your expertise is very different to whingeing, wouldn't you agree? And I would also add that this is Mr Brown's forum - his little home on the Net if you will - and my mother always told me that when you are invited into someone's home, you are at all times gracious. Your comment strikes me as less than gracious.

  • Radiation: Ghosts of television past,

Thanks for that Robyn - it explains things very very well, especially for those of us who are "reality" TV freaks. I, ahem, of course,[facaetiousness ensues] am a pragmatic viewer of these televisual delights, so, of course, believe nothing I see on screen, knowing it all to be cleverly edited so as to manipulate the emotions of the more gullible plebs out there.

  • Radiation: Ghosts of television past,

oh no, I loved A Dog's Show - but then I'm a dog nutter so that stands to reason. I'm also thrilled to bits about Men in Trees. I'm not a great Heche fan (I stuck with Ellen in the divorce) but it is a great little series. She's not overly annoying, Jack floats my boat, and I do like the characters very much. Ma Mai is particularly acerbic and has some very sharp lines. Is anyone else enjoying Studio 60? Once again, I've never enjoyed Matthew Perry overly, but I'm liking this series.

  • Southerly: For Those in Need of Sleep,

What an emotional rollercoaster this thread is. To wit:

    Laughing........

These days, butter wouldn't melt in her mouth.

People say that, and yet, have you tried? Because it does. In my experience, eight year olds enjoy both the testing process, and the horrified look on Grandma's face.

    Crying...........

Apart from hunger there was no upset, no hurt, no distress that could not be cured by snuggling on down on Daddy.

    (that photo is beautiful)

And I don't even have kids. The sleep-deprivation will pass, David. The joy will not. And the funny thing is, that people wait for their child to be "interesting" when birth to 3 yrs old is the most important time in the development of a child's brain. Neurologically, there's all sort of things going on. Pathways are being laid in the most interesting way. Think of that the next time you are sitting in stunned sleeplessness at 3 in the morning, with screaming hell all around you.

  • Hard News: Can somebody hook a brother…,

HP sauce - bad.Watties Homestyle Tomato Sauce - good. And on other matters, I've always enjoyed Moore's films (and books). As long as you recognise that he has an agenda, and take into account that some figures will not be entirely accurate or obtained in an objective manner, you're good to go, I always think.

  • Island Life: Books are our friends,

I meant to say, also in the Listener is the review of Armistead Maupin's new book by Peter Wells. I like a bit of Armistead Maupin, I must say.

  • Island Life: Books are our friends,

There's actually a good article on all this Harry Potter stuff - apologies, David - in the newest Listener. The content isn't available online, but I thought that a few people here may be Listener subscribers, like me.

  • Island Life: Books are our friends,

But Heather, in the case of JKR, that's pretty much how children of the age she's writing for, think. Without entering into a huge explanantion of how childrens' brains develop, she has been very clever in understanding her nonadult audience, and that is who, after all, the books are aimed at.
