That David D'Ath vision you recounted is something I remember David for too. When I slept on the floor at Snail Clamps I woke to see David hanging upside down from a rail attached by large ski boots with big eye hooks fitted into the soles. Serendipitously, my "Tripping USA" photo/audio show was on at Manawatu Art Gallery at the time, and all of the AXEMEN happened to be at the opening. So nek minit we were invited as "guests of honour" for the closing night wild party at Snail Clamps. That was an experience I'll never forget for scaling new heights in incendiary audio madness! Actually found a cassette of that the other day.
