  • Peter Johnston,

Is Russia the band that did that song 'Lisa' back in the day? Still have that on 7" - a great under-stated (and under-rated) Kiwi pop song.

Yes, that's what he said! I confess, I don't recall it.

  • Alan Perrott,

speaking of lost songs, sort of, I've been digging this Gale Garnett album I found in the RG bargain bin - she's known for her hit We'll Sing in the Sunshine (1964).

anyways, turns out she was born here. didn't skedaddle to Canada until she was 11.

this is You've Been Talking 'bout me Baby

and here's the original vid for Small Potatoes, burlesque popcorn styles with added armpit sweat. classy

and just cos, I grabbed this today, Vicki Carr getting all Shirley Bassey on the Flamingos I Only Have Eyes For You,

also, hell yeah on Simone's Revolution, love that version.

Now I'd just like Leftside Wobble to work his magic on that Nina Simone collection... or do you already have some links for that?

  • Francis Cooke,

The drop in price of CD boxsets can be a crazy thing. I purchased a more comprehensive set of Nina’s RCA albums a few months back (‘The Complete RCA Albums Collection’, with each album in full and a swag of outtakes), for the frankly ludicrous price of 30-something dollars. Given that I bought a similar boxset of the albums from her Phillips era some years back for around $100, I’m not sure whether to be happy about the benefit for my wallet or sad that the value of such music has been driven so low.

Meanwhile, one particular recommendation from Nina’s RCA period: the alternate take of her recording of Suzanne. One of her greatest interpretaions, to my mind….

    Yeah, that's what I was getting at. It's a mixed-feelings thing.

    Shit, that's great.

Nope. But this is my favourite amongst the many remixes of Nina’s ‘Feeling Good’. I pester the guy occasionally to re-open downloads, but to no avail …

Mind you, Nicholas Jaar’s effort ain’t too bad …

    There's a good-quality download of that here

Countdown Point Chevalier... not quite as terrible as it used to be

I kinda wish I knew what it used to be like so I can appreciate how less shit it is.

If you ever experienced a 3Guys Supermarket a couple of decades ago, then you'll have an idea - because that's what it was.

  • Grant McDougall,

Those five cd sets are superb, I've treated myself to about 10 of them over the past year or so. They're a pretty good way to get rare stuff you'd otherwise have to pay through the nose for, e.g the Jefferson Airplane set with their v.rare pre-Grace Slick debut.

There's also some good three cd sets, esp. the Leonard Cohen one with New Skin For The Old Ceremony, Death Of A Ladies' Man and Recent Songs on it. Just this arvo I got the three cd Only Ones set at the Warehouse in Mosgiel for $6 !

The way I see it, minstrels have been making money from music for centuries. A few changes to technology in the last decade or so isn't going to have a huge impact in the long term.

  • Harry Musgrave,

Here in Onehunga - at the corner of Onehunga Mall and Arthur Street is a pop up store sellng the remains of the Marbecks stock. They keep threatening to close but were still open last weekend. I have literally spent hours in there and have come away with over 100 Cds. They're selling them at $5 each.
To continue the promotion they also have DVDs, t-shirts and posters (as well as trying to sell fixtures and fittings like power boards and cables.

  • Geoff Lealand,

You can find treasures too amongst the dross in the cheap bins at the Warehouse. Bought a Bo Diddley compilation for $3 (and saw him in concert a year before he died) and a great blues compilation for the price of a lunch voucher. All strength to those people who still buy CDs!

unsummoned delivery of new U2 albums to people who don't even fucking want them

Lie down with iTunes, get up with Safari, Quicktime and lots of other shit that you didn't ask for.

I'd rather have a free U2 album than the other crap.
