  • Island Life: A bar of two halves,

The bridge is beautiful...but brutal. Like a liposuctioned, botoxed, gym cut, dare I say it, German viaduct. A string of lace cutting a valley's air without care of context. My favourite French roads meander with 2 lanes through poplars or mimosas and then buildings of villages, and cost nothing to use. Hackneyed but delightful.

My friend just returned from France where he met up with Jonah Lomu and witnessed a large French riot of acclaim outside his hotel. They love us I tell you and even more since we gave them a wondrous night.

  • Hard News: Connecting the Box,

Vinyl ripping is great for all that rare stuff sitting around on plastic in your attic.

I used a Dick Smith turntable and Audiograbber freeware and ripped Tuxedo Moon and their piece of genius, "Desire".

    It's worth the $100 alone.

  • Random Play: The Cure -- for what ails you,

PS Robert was pitch perfect all night long. And the drummers hair stayed up all night even though his forearms must have had the world's greatest workout.

Obviously Robert doesn't have a pet keyboardist right now and that's a pity as his guitarist with the tatooed head tried vainly to emulate the synth wash with a midi guitar leaving the mix with an excess of treble and white noise.

That's why my ears are still dulled. But I loved the volume which evened the room out as I wandered round the lower bowl. I'm always amazed that people don't have a wander in concerts.

The Peppers didn't have the volume so the slap back could be heard. I have thought that a felt carpet instead of bare concrete floor would make a significant difference to the room.

But overall I'm tired of complaints from people who expect their live rock n roll to be served up to them like widescreen at home in a la-z-boy. I mean seats on the grass at Western Springs?! Come on. Stay home and buy the DVD.

  • Hard News: Death Spiral!,

then there are all those saying it is broke.

    - they want to get elected

    - they have some sort of economic ideology to push

    - they are naturally grumpy

    - they have a vested interest in some business activity (like low-added value manufacturing) which the current NZ economy isn't optimised for

Remember all those business confidence polls over the past 5 years. All negative. It's the kiwi way. We are going to hell in a hand cart, everyday. Brash quoted them. And then the very people who said it'd be crap went big time with their granite Italian kitchens.

This is not a crisis. But it might be. And if it is it won't be our fault. But the self interest of kiwis will cause a change of government and then we'll see if the guy who mocks Cullen's bluffs in the house about Japanese housewives actually has an idea of his own.

I'd like to hear it now. He is after all the MONEY guy with an 8 mill burgled Parnell house.

Big Ups to Nat Torkington's post.

  • Speaker: So farewell then, Tony Blair,

Late I know. Loved this from a Brit. The 3 concerns of the UK electorate

Leaving Iraq and N. Ireland aside, there are essentially three thing that the British electorate cares about:

    1) The NHS/Health System
    2) Public transport - the railways and the tube
    3) Schools

Health Transport Schools. Just like here.

Here are the rules of popular government. Not necessarily good government but popular government.

1 All the people want is the old, sick, poor and young cared for. The rest are too busy working.

2 Most don't care about the detail. We're too busy working. Or worrying about the old, sick, poor or young. Sorry, sometimes all anyone reads are the headlines. BLAIR SCREWS UP. OK then.

3 But make sure you do deal with the detail because a lot of people (bloggers et al) are working on finding the detail you missed. That most people can't fathom. But they do fathom BLAIR SCREWS UP. And believe it. Even in a Murdoch paper.

4 The rule of locality. Make sure everyone at home is happy before you try to fix anyone elses home.

Sometimes the French almost seem to make sense. Apart from the nothing works thing.

  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

The quarter billion Telecom share option was a doozy. Not a penny down. Gibbs was also an option holder and now all that money is making amphibious cars. AND NOT EVEN IN NZ!!!

  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

Arrested on Sunday. TV told. No chance for suppression. Monday the debate on middle class P use is in full flight. Is this the police using celebrity deliberately to fuel debate?

By the way. What should we do to the passports of the politicians who sold state owned monopolies to private equity firms and then claim they opened the economy and deserve our undying respect?

Economic Theory. There's only 1 thing worse than a state owned monopoly and that's a private one.
