As a parent of very young girls it seems to me that gendered social conditioning is alive and well and I know I'm not the only one who's noticed it. I feel like I have to push back at it on a daily basis.

Hi Paul - I was being somewhat facetious. I have two girls and feel the same way as you do! Of course we individual parents want to raise/nurture all our children to be humane, respectful etc. However, broader societal forces are not aimed the same way and I used that language to make a point. Sorry that it didn't come across clearly!

Not sure if I want to wade into this but...say there is a significant effect of biology on male behaviour. Surely then the socialisation around masculinity in most cultures (see gun ad upthread) exacerbates the alleged propensity for violence. The answer to that would then be essentially the same as what Danielle and Lucy are saying. Dare I even take it to the extreme: boys should be trained to be even more passive than girls, so as to overcome the effect of the biology!

What s milestone indeed! I've been avidly listening and then reading and later commenting on Hard News and its offshoots since back at Uni. You guys make what I often find boring (eg politics, elections, economics) really interesting. Both the bloggers and the commenters.
I would also be happy to set up a regular subscription payment.

My 5 year old came home with her NS report yesterday. The 40 week report and she has only been at school 30 weeks. Not terribly relevant.
By the way, we have read to her from birth and if someone is reading a book out loud in her vicinity she will drop whatever she is doing and rush over to hear it. However, she was nowhere near reading before she started school. Everyone learns at their own pace. I came to NZ when I was almost six with no english, so I had to learn the language and to read and write it at the same time. So my view is that there is plenty of time as long as the support and encouragement is there.
A final point, my daughter's teacher tells us that the standard expected of our children now is much higher than when we were at primary school.

Wellington is wonderful, especially on a lovely day. I went down last November for the Opening Night of Show Me Shorts and it was a fantastic weekend. This year I am taking my partner and kids down for that so I hope the weather holds!
