  • Speaker: Why we need to stop talking…, in reply to Kumara Republic,

    Apples and oranges.

On the contrary, it's 100% apples to apples. There's a clear inequality but I don't give a shit about it. And I don't see why I SHOULD give a shit about it.

Seriously, this is the problem. I'm an interested literate politically-aware correspondent asking for a definition of inequality and why I should care, and no-one has yet been able to provide one. If you can't engage with me you don't have a shit show of getting Joe Sixpack to care.

  • Speaker: Why we need to stop talking…, in reply to Rosemary McDonald,

There is obvious inequality present; Tracy Chapman and I are unequal in, to choose but one example, the fact that she has won a Grammy and I have not. However that is not inequality that I care about very much.

Discussion point: We need to stop talking about inequality because...

You haven't yet told me why I should care about it. What sort of inequality?

People are sick to fucking death of this current 'government'...they see it for what it is.

And yet the National government is presently polling higher than it was the month after the election that brought it to power:

This is what the intellectual left struggles with. On the one hand, it’s desperately important to all of us that we signal our brilliance to each other. Some of that’s ego, but also a lot of it is just to save wasting time – people don’t have to explain everything to you if you let on that you already have the background to get what they’re on about.

That's not a trait unique to what you call "the intellectual left". It's characteristic of nerds in general.

  • Speaker: Why we need to stop talking…, in reply to Rosemary McDonald,

In my dreams, I have a committed National/Key voter pinned down, explaining exactly why they voted the way they did.

What did they think they were going to achieve?

Because they looked at the people who would be in government if National/Key DIDN'T get elected, and they voted accordingly.

They thought they would achieve "keeping those people out of government".

    They succeeded.

You know what I think happened?

Someone saw Clare Curran asking for help with “Droopol” on twitter

    https://twitter.com/clarecurranmp/status/67917487261495296

and thought “Clare Curran’s doing something on the web and will fuck it up because Clare Curran, so let’s dig around and see what her pet projects are right now, and if Labour is about to launch any new websites or if it has registered any domains recently”.
