  • Hard News: Beijing: Ignoring it is not…,

Oh, Russell, your final "not facetious" question was wonderful!

I think I need to blog about this show now. :-)

  • Hard News: Something odd and unresolved,

Thanks, everyone, for spelling arse correctly and making an old pedant very happy!

I've been thinking about this since you brought it up the other day. Y'see, for me, I can't write that word at all. "Arse" to me is the UK usage, where it is a common expletive and much is made of that middle "r" sound. "Ass" is the USA usage, which is almost invariably descriptive, and always seems to catch a drawl when its said, like a sail catching wind.

The NZ version is different in both pronunciation and usage to either of those ones. I don't like either spelling; I think we need our own, but of course you can't force these things.

(And in re: John Key bio - if it was closer to the election, I'd smell a rat. As it is, I'm prepared to give the Herald a pass on this one, even though I'm a very happy citizen of Helengrad. Not that I've read it or even seen a copy of course, that would take far too much effort.)

  • Hard News: Mo' Indexing,

I love the extensive and detailed discussion of the map project, the problems of interpretation, dangers of ill-considered use, etc.

It strikes me as an extremely well-documented project that is very sensitive to its impact. Neat. (It's political correctness gone magic!)

  • Hard News: Friday Fun,

Running short of ignorant and aggressive comments to news stories? Never fear, spEak You're bRanes has an automated generator that will solve that problem!

(Copied direct from my own reg'lar Friday Linky - that's the pick of the litter this week I think.)

Also: dammit! Missed Making Tracks! I hope I get another chance, it sounds like a good wee bit of fun.

Re: hoodies - I am a notoriously stubborn hoodie wearer. They definitely don't have the cachet here that they do in the UK - I remember returning to Edinburgh after some travelling, wearing my nice new white hoodie that I'd been wearing for a few weeks in all kinds of civilised settings, and I was shocked to see how reactions to me changed - I was eyed suspiciously in shops, young neds asked me if I could buy them liquor, and little old ladies crossed the street to avoid me. No, seriously, she crossed the street because she was afraid of me.

Hoodies are serious business over there - the tabloid culture + ned/chav culture + massive oversignification of clothes = hoodie fear.

Re: the online pre-cancellation campaign to save Dollhouse - there was previously a pre-cancellation effort to save the Sarah Connor Chronicles. It was basically a joke, and hardly anyone signed the petition because they all recognised it was a joke:

That said, I'm with Patrick Neilsen Hayden at Boing Boing - preparation makes sense to me.
