  • Cracker: Psst... buddy... got any BZP?,

Oh, no - I'll be out exploring the places I love so much, and haven't seen properly for so long. Makara Beach, Karori (my friend and I are hoping that Johnson's Hill has undergone the "gotten smaller as we've got older" thing), the Wainui hills, Lower Hutt, Tinakori Rd, the bush.........I went to school at Marsden so we'll be poking around up there too.

  • Hard News: Not off to bed,

Would it be overly naive of me to ask if anyone has ever done research into why people need to get high? I'm not entirely pure, but neither have I ever relied on alcohol or drugs as a social lubricant. (unless ciggies count as one, because let's face it, when you're a social outcast, you meet some very interesting other social outcasts lurking outside various venues around town). It's something I'd be interested in knowing. I'm glad they're banning party pills - appalling that they sell the bloody things in liquor shops - but I do acknowledge that people like more buzz for their buck. Now, I want to know why. Why do people need to get trashed. Hate it, I really do.

Nice article, Damian, and I understand it's a kind of riposte. Me, I love Wellington. Off on a tiki tour of the lower North Island on Monday, with an eye to being in Welly by Wednesday to see a school friend not seen for at least 24 years. Should I pack my thermals? (For the Wellington weather, I hasten to add, not the friend)

  • Hard News: Here and There,

By the way...those she-pee bums are a bit dodgy.

Not being interested in rugby at all - but I like Mary Durham as a sports reporter, meself - the only contribution I can make to this thread is to say: Andrew, I believe those are real women. And that's what real womens' bums look like. All cellulitey etc. Marvellous.

  • Island Life: Are you old enough?,

Voting is a privilege. To give it to people, most of whom as has already been pointed out, would not appreciate it, nor bother to participate in the democratic process, seems a little wasteful to me. At 17, maybe people are old enough to vote. But why fix something that isn't broken? I remember the first time I was able to vote was in 1984 - when I was 20. I was thrilled. I had been involved in the Springbok marches in 81 as a 17 year old, I had political opinions, and I was very aware of the responsibility involved with the voting process. I'm not patronising 16 years olds at all when I say it just isn't old enough. It's not old enough to do most things. I repeat, why oh why are we pushing kids to grow up so early? Let them enjoy as much carefree time as they possibly can. God, we spend enough time as adults dealing with the hard stuff. Leave the kids alone.

will probably think you're patronising to refer to them as children.

Well, aren't you legally a child at 16? Really, the way I see it, 18 is a good age for people to start voting. It's also I believe a good age for people to start having sex in my humble opinion. But that's another thing entirely. Children having children.......

Why do we all want our children to grow up so fast anyway?

  • Island Life: Are you old enough?,

I'm entirely against 16 year olds having the vote. I just don't see that they are mature enough, and surely the point of being an adolescent is that your body is undergoing some pretty radical reproductive and sexual changes.. I know some 16 year olds who are entirely capable of standing still long enough to make informed decisions about national politics. But not most of them. And isn't that what the Youth Caucas every year is about? No no no no - kids these days already think they are 18 when they are 12. Don't be giving them any real responsibility. It will just swell their heads and make the little buggers even more impossible.

So glad they're doing well, those Conchord chappies. Had seen that song they did on Letterman before, live, and still had a good old chuckle. Love them.

  • Radiation: It had a dog,

I'm of the opinion that you either get something or you don't. And if you don't, you just don't. No need to fuss, or worry. Gad, I don't watch Grey's Anatomy or CSI or anything like that - just not me. You like what you like, and you know what you like. Good for you!
