    "I can smell the money"

Hasn't that been the driving force of the re-build?, the profit has spoken.
I wonder if the BOOM to which he refers is the sound of a new tranche of demolitions to make way for a Merrill Lynch building or maybe a Bank of America branch.
I note the ''Deloitte'' building is already looking wobbly, is it held up by Bankers Trust?.

Thanks Ian. I still need some kind of proof about the City of Cranes though. Any takers?.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Songs of Ennui, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

back when ya could throw any old rubbish on the back roads near Chchch

Reminds me. I have been hearing the phrase "Christchurch is the city of cranes"
Nicky Wagner said it first about a year back
and I recall it being used last week in Parliament.
Every time I see footage of the Christchurch skyline I look for all those cranes only to see three or four.
Could you or anybody for that matter, get a shot of the skyline and post it, I need to see what the truth is.
When I first came to NZ in '86 I was told that all the cranes on the skyline, about 40 of them, showed how successful Auckland was at that time.

Christchurch will be able to enjoy 'South Pacific', the musical.

Ah, the "Good Old Days", good to see Christchurch still retains that colonial soul.
Personally I think South Pacific, the Musical should be banned forthwith, just for being a musical as much as anything else.

North by north has become my favorite tune since first hearing back in '87.
    Mesmerisingly melodic and simply superb.

  • Hard News: To have a home, in reply to Lucy Telfar Barnard,

I kind of think the important thing from this post is that we've got a long history of "could do better" in refugees and immigration policy,

    What?
That is so far from what is important here. That is so much like "It's ok, Labour did it".
More handwringing. "I feel so guilty I don't have to actually do something because others haven't"
We should be shaming John Key and the National Party, this is here now, not some guilt ridden history lesson.
Anyhow, I have said what I feel and I need say no more.

It can also help if you have a window that is darker beyond it,

Or a mirror. The picture would be backwards but...
Once you get the looking through bit its a piece of piss, as they say in Wandsworth. (apparently)
    ;)

  • Hard News: Not yet standing upright, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

where do you look to coalesce limbs?
    focus & focal length?
    does the background disappear?

    I feel so excluded already…

I find it easiest to look "through" the image, focusing in a point beyond the 2D surface, a point where similar shapes overlap and create an illusion of depth.
It is a 2 stage process. First you get the depth illusion then the image gradually emerges. Once you get there it is sometimes hard to not see it without looking away.
    Hope that helps.
    ;-)

That flag would be offensive to the Welsh. Sometimes you just can't win.
