bitten to bits the evening before we left NZ, sitting on the verandah of our friends house on the Te Atatu peninsula
Sympathies abound. Those pesky little varmints would just love some tender Anglicized flesh. We are forced to smother ourselves in BugOff and the like, even to water the garden. I guess it balances the pleasures of lazy, warm hours though:)

Erm....A few more words on the Hobbit? Or, a few more words by the Hobbit? (Because, occasionally, I feel I resemble one). But the discussion seems to be a long way from where it started - not that there's anything wrong, if you've been following. But if you haven't......?

Around half of the carers these days seem to be from somewhere other than NZ.
Not about aged care, Joe, but in my recent stay at Auckland Hospital, I noticed the same thing. Regardless of where the staff came from, the care I got was absolutely marvellous.

Going back a wee way
I was fascinated with the notion that a parent should tell their child that anything less than an A is not good enough. Is it possible for everyone in an Asian class to get an A? If not, I guess you see yourself as in a sort of constant fight or competition with those around you. It must be very stressful.
I can't find a link at this time to the number who kill themselves because they don't get good enough marks, but there's this.

While there was some serious talent involved in FF the Movie – some of the background art is gorgeous – it was directed by the odious little slimeball responsible for the previous decade’s dancing cossacks.
I found the movie really disappointing because of the soundtrack. I know the actors involved could have been marvellous, but somehow they sounded as if they were all whispering or something. That has to be direction.
