  • Hard News: Holiday Open Thread 1: Beach…,

We've had a pleasant time over the past few days, basically tidying up the garden, which had been thoroughly neglected due to work (my sister's) and inability (mine). However, today we must remove a whole freezer's worth of rotted food and put it out for the collection tomorrow. Heaven knows when the freezer gave up the ghost. It lives in the garage and was working before Christmas. Anyone else had the horror of that stench?

  • Hard News: Behaving badly at the bottom…,

I am only mentioning the length, not making any comment about what happened.

Thank goodness for that. Made my blood boil, quite frankly, hearing about that jury.

Damian, thanks for this post, and your Christmas spirit. No "bah humbug" with you!

One year I decided to give goats, chickens and other goodies, via my family, to folk overseas. Everyone thought it was a wonderful idea, but I heard later that one of my rellies - French-born, as it happens, and I'm not interpolating anything, I swear - was to be seen later on, stamping her foot and saying, "What do I want with a goat??" I guess she didn't know where she'd keep it.

And not a lemon tree in sight?

Mid-winter, hot flush. Only thing to do is go outside and pee under the lemon. Supposed to be good for them. Lemons I mean. I can tell you now, it was utter bliss for me!

Ah! I have read of him, and read what he's written, of course, but what I want to now is this: is he the lovely Ian Dalzeal, or is he the lovely Ian Dee Ell?

  • Hard News: My Year in Culture,

no need to capture your own

Felt that way through a world trip. Couldn't be bothered getting my own shots of views/buildings/what-have-yous, when there was all that atmosphere to soak up.

    Go for it, Damian.

  • Hard News: My Year in Culture, in reply to Hadyn Green,

Serving up drinks icy cold is an excellent way of avoiding immediate comment. I'd be rather suspicious at a tasting....

I was once brought an extremely chilled bottle of chardonnay in the restaurant of a well-known Hawkes Bay winery. It was sent back. Puzzled looks all round - staff obviously gobsmacked that we wanted wine we could taste, and me and my fellow diners amazed that anything like this should happen in the first place.

  • Speaker: It's called "planning" for a reason,

Interesting that your pic of suburban terrace houses (Sydney?) has no obvious place for cars. Sydney streets are full of cars, which isn't so pleasant. People here see a car as vital, at least until something better in terms of transport is available. Making room for each terrace house dweller's car would scupper a compact 3-to-a-section terrace house build.

There could of course be something fairly radical - one of those "filing cabinet" carparks at the end of each street. I think I'd prefer that.
