  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine,

Bloody hell. Surprised he held on for so long. But still. 80% of (the remaining) 3News' mana just walked out the door.

  • Hard News: The K Road Story,

Thanks Russell! A great read. (I almost typed 'a great Reid'. That would have been ... odd!)

  • OnPoint: Yeah nah, but what *do* we…, in reply to Gruntie,

The thing I dislike about the proposed flag is the silver fern being the symbol of our "kiwi myth" - that's so linked in the marketing of our sport teams - and I'm a sports nut - but I don't want to minimise New Zealand to that - we are much much more

That's exactly my feeling. I'm alienated by the insistence the silver fern must mean a lot to me. I enjoy watching sport, but it's not a core part of my identity as a kiwi. Not even close.
Land and culture. Both are absent from the Lockwood flag. This vacuity cuts deep. I'd like to change the flag. But can't vote for it.

  • Speaker: What Star Wars can teach us…,

Fascinating and insightful. “Story’ has been a marketing buzzword for the last few years, and I too find this both attractive (of course we all love a good story) and creepy (marketing!? Who wants to be a ‘mark’!?)
I think there’s a lot more to the success of Star Wars than the ‘monomyth’. There’s something to the ‘hero’s journey’ for sure, but I don’t think you can sweep all mythology into the one structure. It’s too static – and myths do mutate.
But still. Watching the US president-making-machine grind back into gear, the race is crowded with candidates calling themselves ‘anti-establishment’ and vying for the chance to take on the Death Star.

That looks like the ticket. I thought paypal might work, but amazon won't allow that.

  • Hard News: Music: All this and some…,

Some success buying music from 7digital and google play. But both appear to have less-than-stellar back-catalogue.
Bandcamp is great, but didn't have what I was looking for this time.)

Flying out are good, but limited range of course.
Just frustrated I can't buy a bunch of music even with ready money :)

  • Hard News: Music: All this and some…,

Off-topic and all that but ...
How do people buy downloadable music in New Zealand, apart from itunes store? I can't find a decent legitimate outlet to spend $.
Amazon US have a great range, but the Australian/NZ music site seems hopeless. (It doesn't even seem to be separately searchable - so there's no way to work out what you can buy with an NZ credit card, and what you can't, until you try to buy it. Then the rule seems to be - if I want it, I can't have it.)
Amplifier was good, but only for NZ titles, and it's almost gone.
    Any other options out there?

  • Hard News: Radio being made, in reply to Russell Brown,

Reporters will want to get good at sending pictures

I know reporters who don’t want to get good at photography and video :)

And broadcasting schools better at teaching this stuff.

At Canterbury university, the TV component of the journalism diploma has been a bit old-school. But 2015 it was all about shooting – and editing – on whatever students had/could lay their hands on.
You can get great images on a phone (and rubbish on a high-end dslr!) Mostly they did very well – shooting, writing, and editing. The weakest link (imho) was most often the audio. But even that was surprisingly good sometimes, considering it came from cheap camera/phone mics used thoughtlessly.
