  • Hard News: A Full Sense of Nationhood,

I'm going to phone a friend for this one, Ben. Emma, are you there?

Yes I am, Gio, and no that's not the way you like it. There's not enough mascarpone for a start.

  • Field Theory: Cricketucation,

I propose to call this new format Mega Cricket Xtreme.

You know what would make that even more exciting? If at random intervals the ball just, y'know, totally EXPLODED. Awesome.

  • Hard News: A Full Sense of Nationhood,

I'd go as far as to say it would be a splendid topic for a PhD, except it's been done.

I'm going to go ahead and call pwnage on this.

Because in writing you lose the marvellously subtle and not so subtle cues of verbal intonation.

Again often, but not always. Or again, these things are not always necessary for understanding what someone is communicating.

Oh but, as someone who's been moderating discussion boards and administrating web communities for long enough to feel old and jaded (and then about another decade, because that takes a couple of months), we lose SO much, so often.

At BW, I'd say about a third of our dispute resolution work boils down to this. Person A says (ie writes) something to person B, who interprets it as an insult, and responds 'in kind'. We end up with a full-blown barney with both sides convinced the other person started it, and they're both right .

So we try to find all kinds of ways to convey our meaning more clearly without all the non-verbal clues we absolutely rely on in face to face communication. As my friend Sayana says, you can say anything on the net as long as you add a smiley you slutty cow :).

F'r'instance, google tells me that IMO + 'in my opinion' yields 850 hits at System. I don't think the phrase is that common in face to face communication, because people can 'just tell' how adamant you are about something.

So, every cue you can cram into your writing makes your point, your tone, everything, more comprehensible to your readers. If you put the onus on your readers to work to understand you, you're going to spend a lot of time saying 'no look, that's not what I meant'. That's not a 'moral obligation', it's just a matter of practicality.

  • Up Front: Isn't It Romantic?,

Hey, no offense meant. Of course the true explanation is (relatively) innocent, but the image of the third wheel left standing in the street was just so entertaining... :)

Oh, none taken, it was supposed to be entertaining. That's what my past is for, making people laugh.

Of course, back when we were teenages science fiction reading did too. It was a slightly wierd geeky thing that the wierd geeks read.

Being the mother of a geek, I'm very happy about its 'new black' status. I'm more concerned about my eleven year old daughter who's just announced that she wants to go to a firing range for her birthday party.

    Mmm... Yvone Craig...

I was Susan Oliver. But don't let that disturb your image of Yvonne Craig.

The thought of an instant invitation to 'come on up' being delivered to only two out of three serenaders seems too cruel...please Emma, tell me it is too cruel.

Indeed, it wasn't straight away . I dated first one of them, and then the second one (and Reader, I married him, briefly). The only overlap was months after the singing incident, at a party I went to dressed as a Green Orion Slave Girl. I do have some standards, you know.

But what does "Grace before meat" mean! The mind boggles.

Indeed. If the heroine's name is Grace, I'm really disturbed.

Emma - was that with two of the three guys at the same time? Just checking.

I shall cough, shift in my seat, and mutter something unintelligible.

  • Radiation: The death of television, again,

If Entertainment Weekly is to be believed, you're going to be seeing rather more of Mr B's body this season. Unless, of course, they stop at the bedroom door ...

Two things. One, hush up Mr Spoiler Man.

Two, the contrast in my attitudes to Bones and Dollhouse have me thinking about *glances round shiftily* opyright-cae.

I will wait for Bones. I know it will be played here and I'm prepared to wait to watch it. Net financial benefit to its makers from me? Approximately feck-all.

I will 'steal' Dollhouse. I believe that either it won't get played here, or it'll get solidly Firefly-ed. And I can't wait, cause I'm a big geek. Net financial benefit to Joss Whedon from me? The hundreds of bucks I've spent on DVDs of shows I had already seen when I bought them.

Emma, this Valentines Day is also my brother's 50th birthday and yet I am not you. And you are not my sister... or are you?

Spooky, possums. I guess, "Stewart", I have no objective way of knowing if you're one of my other brothers or not. You'd know if I were your sister, though. You'd just know. Cause, y'know, this is my name and everything. Honest.

Oh, God, how long would it take for all that brooding and hair-product to get tired? No sex is that good. Never.

Oh goody, and excuse to post this:

Once up a time, I would have been shocked by that juxtaposition. Where is my mind?

So by the time I do get started on the BDSM columns, you should be well beaten down?
