  • Speaker: KICK IT! The Wee Fella,

Oh, and this German team are a phenomenon. How do you coach a bunch of 21 & 24 year olds to come flying out of the box at an experienced and talent filled Argentinean side like that? Incredible stuff.

Nope, I think your narrative is perfect. Maradona had to get smashed in this Cup so he can come back from the depths of despair and redeem himself and Messi in 2014. Looking forward to it already.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! Quartered,

Sorry guys but Gio is right and the infringement was dealt with absolutely correctly. Suarez was sent off and Ghana given the opportunity to go through with whast should have been almost a formality. The fact is that Gyan got himself carried away when he really should have taken a second breath and done what he did 5 minutes later, put it in the back of the net.

It's sad for Ghana but it doesn't alter the fact that the game was totally in their own hands.

For those calling for penaly goals, bans and summary execution where would you draw the line? Suarez batted the ball out but what about players raising their hands and the ball being deflected, running acoss the goal and having it ricochet off upper arms and a host of other scenarios. The ref has to make the call there and then and the current rules give him the ability to do that, it's simple and clear.

Feel really sorry for Gyan, this will sit with him for the rest of his life but it doesn't mean that the current rules are wrong.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! Quartered,

Both games were absolutely extraordinary today, incidentally. Two for the annals.

Agreed, was in a bit of shock after each of them, for different reasons. Never thought the Dutch had it in them to come back from 1 down to Brazil, amazing effort.

And Ghana, my god Gyan will be having nightmares about that for the rest of his life.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! Quartered,

@ Peter - England won it in '66? I was raised to believe it was the Irons. I'm shattered.

    We try to be modest.

    @Giovanni See, 23, that's even worse.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! Quartered,

Yes, but! Squad numbers have been around for ages in the world cup.

Doesn't make it alright though. If Bobby Moore had trucked out in a '31' shirt there's no way England would have won in '66. I'm surprised England haven't actually realised this yet?

  • Speaker: KICK IT! Quartered,

... I then fancy Holland to go on and win the thing overall. If only for the sense of nostalgia I got when looking at the Dutch starting XI for the 2nd round match. Shirt numbers 1-11 without exception - a rarity in these days of squad numbers. A central striker wearing the 9, wide-men 7 and 11 ... ah, great stuff.

Snap. Me and my son thought the same thing. It felt good. Hell and damnation to squad numbers!

  • Hard News: And some cat from Japan ...,

Typical Bindel, has just paid a Glastonbury ticket with the sole intent of seeing Snoop and then states that she's not going to spend another cent on him until he turns into Bono. Right....

She's got it right though, he's got more funk in the trunk than just about any of his contemporaries and he's always had great taste in producers (Dre etc..). I tend to treat his lyrics as cartoon stupidity on a South Park level though, sometimes funny, often baiting.

Eminem presents a similar conundrum although his tunes aren't nearly as interesting. But when he's clever, he's very good. And when he's bad he's awful.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! Quartered,

Really? I had no idea. I can think of other players on the team who deserve the tag a lot more than him based on ability.

Legend might have been over-egging it a bit but he's hugely popular amongst the fans in Ghana. One of the top goal scorers for them he's played in the Premier league and Serie A and of course the Champions League, including a spot in the final. Admittedly his form wasn't the best in 2009/10 and he has had a spat with the Ghana coach but I don't think any of that matters to the fans.

There was a nice documentary a couple of weeks ago on the Documentary Channel about Ghanain kids trying to score European football contracts and he featured quite heavily and there's no doubting his popularity.

There's also Essien, Appiah and even good old John Paintsil from Fulham, of course. Such a shame Essien has missed out on playing at this World Cup.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! Quartered,

Isn't Uruguay both? 'old World Cup' and 'New World cup', you might say.

Well I guess, especially if they get through to the semi's or final. It's a strange history that Uruguay are now locked into, 2 World Cup wins suggests a football powerhouse but they've been little more than minnows in the last 25 years.

My heart says Ghana though, players like Muntari are legends in African football and it would be great to see him get a final.
