  • Hard News: Review: Lana Del Rey, 'Born…,

All the hooha around Lana Del Rey has resulted in a lot of really good writing on the subject. I'm particularly impressed by Jessica Hooper at Spin (Deconstructing Lana Del Rey) and Sasha Frere-Jones at the New Yorker (Screen Shot: Lana Del Rey's fixed image)

By the way, the Spin article seems to indicate that the name change came from Lana herself, and not her management. Like Lady Gaga, she's the author of her own pop persona.

I didn't get Lana Del Rey until I realised she's just a pop singer. LDR's bounce around the cool indie world left me indifferent. It's just been in the last couple of weeks that the fuller picture has become clear. Oh, she's just a pop singer with some good songs. There's plenty of room in my life for that.

I have no objection to her working with Rick Nowles (a good match, with his music style) or anyone else. Good pop always involves teamwork, and it sounds like LDR has a strong vision of what she wants her music to be.

Also, LDR is 25 - the same age Madonna was when her first album was released. This is kind of old in the world of pop, but in both cases, that age has brought experience and stories to be told.

My favourite BDO photo – Sam Scott doing the “IT’S A LIE!” bit in “Nest Egg”. I was up the front during the Phoenix Foundation’s set in 2008. I figured something amazing was going to happen, hit my shutter and hoped for the best.

This thread is awesome. Thanks Robyn.

Thanks Dyan! I was just checking in to see how it was going and I'm pleased to see there's over 200 responses now. So many lovely cats.

Robyn – that ginger kitty below the 3-legged cat appears to be 2-legged.

    It's a monorail cat.

I remember we discussed a while back the cat corialis effect, and what the different direction of curl might indicate.

My brother and I once came up with a taxonomy of different cat positions. All I can remember was the donut and the power donut. The power donut involved curling up into a circle while still standing, then flopping down sideways to ensure a really tight donut was maintained.

Christmas care packages: food for the humans, a box for the cat.

This reminds me - one Christmas my dad was sent a hamper that came in a wooden box packed with sawdust. Within minutes of the goodies being taken out of the box, one of the cats had repurposed it as a litter tray.

Omigod … here we go. The first picture of Colin (taken last night by Fiona) is a bit of a Maru tribute. But Colin is prettier than Maru.

O hai, Colin! He's making that bag look very stylish.

Talk about opening Pandora’s Box, Robyn! You realize that Public Address is never going to be the same again, don’t you?

Before Capture launched and we were throwing ideas around about what sort of posts to do, one thing that came up quite early on was a cat post. It was pretty much compulsory.

And this is Maxwell's sister, Minn-Minz, looking lion-like mid-yawn. She's still with us, an elderly 16!

Here's a cat who isn't a stranger to me. This is Maxwell, who sadly is no longer with his. He was a great big furry cat and would get dreadlocks in the strangest places.
