We once took and American friend (yes some of them are nice it is a big country after all and there are bound to be some nice ones) to lunch in Auckland city and she looked around and asked "why is everyone wearing black? Did something bad happen?"
No, no! May random deities save us from American clothing! Those khaki pleated pants they all wear are an abomination. And the *jorts*. Endless, endless pairs of jorts. And the *shoes*. The white sneaker obsession! Argh!
(Disclaimer: holder of a US passport, married to one, father is one, many of them are awesome, many of them dress well. But most of them... do not. Particularly in the south. So, so horrid.)

Oh lawd. Did this thread just turn into another 'Why Robbery Thinks Russell is a Tryhard Media Emperor and Has No Clothes' argument? Because honestly? I don't think I can bear it.
Robbery. Dude. Let this Long National Nightmare of Needling Russell end! Pleasepleaseplease... I'm begging you here. We know. We know. He's trying to take over Teh Media, and he doesn't know as much about it as you, and he doesn't allow for the huddled masses of alternative viewpoints yearning to breathe free on PAS, and we're all obsequious toadies to The Cult of Russell, we get it, we get it. My *god*. :)

I suppose the upcoming Bond film gets right on your wick then Carol. :)

I believe in rehabilitation too, for what that's worth. Not via Paul Holmes, though.

anyone would think it was a crime to check detail and strive to be well informed
I have a distinct feeling that even if you were living in the toe of Veitch's shoe while the kicking was administered, you'd find some way to nitpick this issue...

Yes, his bravery is truly awe-inspiring.

Don't be! I'm originally from Kelston (in West Auckland). Palmie is culturally above Kelston by roughly the same ratio that Paris is above Palmie.
Hey! Some of us live perilously close to Kelston, you know!

Try this - Holmes interview
Um, thanks. I think. Of course, I'm now going to lose my breakfast, so there's that problem.
I like the part where he says that this is 'the darkest period [he's] ever had'. Right. Not the actual assault itself, but the 'being found out' bit...

Not fair - we didn't know this
No no, I wasn't trying to be unfair - just making a joke about how relativism and empathy tend to drop away suddenly after hearing something like that. (And if you have to explain the joke, it probably isn't funny. Whoops.)
Helen, linky no worky! Where is said interview (she says lazily, not wanting to actually do anything herself)?

From this morning's Herald:
Veitch left Kristin on floor for hours
Six hours, the story says. After throwing her down the stairs.
Hey man, don't be so judgemental! We've all been there!... oh.
