  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

What concerns me is the intensity of the blame.

Because so many people here have advocated stringing the guy up by his balls. Oh, wait, no: *no one here has done that*. And in fact, the greatest extent of 'blame' has stretched to calling the dude a 'scumbag' and wishing the case would be prosecuted by the police. Quelle horreur! How dare we wish for someone who has admitted to committing a violent crime to go to court instead of paying his victim off!

In other words, I think you are *hugely* exaggerating this 'intensity of the blame' thing, and I have no idea why.

    provocation

That's one of the 'real issues' in this case?

    grossly stupid action

This thread is getting so weirdly apologist for this dude. Since when is cracking four vertebrae and putting someone in a wheelchair just 'stupid'? It's not 'stupid'. It's not something any of us could have done in the heat of the moment, or whatever other bullshit line Your Views is spinning right now. It's a really serious and deliberate assault, not a 'stupid action'!

[Five, four, three, two, one.] 'But we don't know what really happened...'

I think the reason I'm finding this so irritating is that these arguments are exactly what people have used forever to ignore and trivialise domestic violence. 'It's not our business, it's between them, we don't know what really happened, maybe it wasn't as bad as it looks, we're rushing to judgement...'

    Meh. Just... meh.

Are you suggesting that PA is run on our not attempting to use facts as a basis for opinions?

Clearly not. I'm just pointing out that the little 'we weren't there! we don't know!' dance some of you are doing over this particular issue has a smidge of the Doth Protest Too Much about it.

    Or, what Russell said.

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

The facts of the matter are that none of us were there and so any "facts and evidence" that we have is all supposition...

Oh yes, the time-honoured 'if a tree falls in the forest' analysis. That's a brilliant way to approach any and all issues. Isn't it funny how people keep crazily trying to, like, *find out stuff*, when they could just give up, safe in the assumption that if they weren't there, they have no hope of ever knowing anything?

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

It is not really. It may be what happened, but cracking 3 (or 4, or 5 depending on the "facts") vertebrae is not quite breaking your back. We don't really know. Did he kick her in the head? Maybe but the our judgements are predicated on media reports.

If we all followed your terrifyingly stringent standards for facts and evidence before discussing any issues, Ian, I think we might end up shutting down PA System altogether...

  • Hard News: Consumer,

I have no interest in purchasing the iPhone (16GB of storage? Feh! Plus my annoyance with iTunes is well-documented), but I just clicked over to Vodafone to look at these controversial pricing plans. My initial reaction is: are they fucking kidding? DUDE.

Still, maybe if someone lets me play with one I'll be converted...

  • Readers' Tips,

And we all know to dry our washed windows or mirrors with old newspaper, right? Streak-free!

(Of course, my windows are constantly shocking, but if I ever *did* wash them, I'd know.)

Hey! Leave 'Mummy can't talk now Toni's on the screen' Toni alone.

I like watching Jim Hickey on TV1 better, particularly during those little spots at about 7.40pm during Coro St. He's so *weird*. He has all these strange blazer-adjusting tics, and he always exhorts you to do something irrelevant at the end of every bulletin. You know he thinks he's being avuncular, but it ends up coming off kinda creepy. 'Put the jug on!' Really, Jim? Do I have to?

I don't understand this. What's he saying? What's he asking? What's the answer? Apes come from... Los Angeles? Tennis clubs? It's so confused and ignorant.. is it offensive?

Sorry, not to get all historical on your ass again, but... emphatically yes. Racist iconography has often associated African-Americans with apes or monkeys as a dehumanising slur.

As for this rehab interview with Paul Holmes... I have a disturbed feeling. Is Veitch actually about to keep his job or something?
