    Loved the Truman Capote story.

    Lol.

Bastes bottom with basic brandy. Brandishes beauty beaming.

Doesn’t require much brandy at all, but only if you can resist the urge to sample it yourself after the feeding.

You just dribble the liquor evenly over the cake – a teaspoonful or two – but not so much that it’s soggy. It soaks in, and lodges rather nicely in the fruit.

(Actually, a common or garden fruit cake would come up wonderfully too.)

ETA: Turn the cake upside down, though. They're often glazed.

  • Hard News: Popular Paranoiac Politics,

Sorry - thread hijack, but it is Friday!

Ben - as a fellow Avondalite, here's some very good news - the commissioners have made a decision on the Rosebank pohutukawa.

    "10th December 2010

Rosebank Pohutukawa Saved – Tree Council Vindicated!

The Tree Council is very relieved that independent commissioners today totally rejected an application to fell the well known, landmark Pohutukawa, at 321 Rosebank Road, Avondale. The application was considered at a day long hearing on November 12th, 2010."

This tree, along with a companion oak, is just coming into flower. Hooray for community voices and the Tree Council!

I've never made a fruit cake, but feeding them is another thing altogether! Best thing I ever did was buy one of those really expensive Christmas cakes (reduced to a fraction of the pre-Christmas price straight after the festive week) and feed it brandy once a week for the whole year.

I'm telling you, it wash delishush!

Lol. But I think it looks more like caramel custard.

Reminds me of when I was 18 and was talked into going red. My friend the (amateur) hairdresser had this theory that she should bleach it first, and then put a red rinse through. Came out about the colour of Her Ladyship's, but at least I had the pale colouring that went with it (sort of).

Hey! Maybe my friend moved to Christchurch and is still theorizing?

  • Hard News: Love you too, man,

The end of an era. I was constantly late for work because I just had to listen to the last few minutes before running in to the radio station I worked for.....turned on to bFM through someone who worked for yet another radio station, and have been a listener since then. Car radio permanently tuned to it, except for hard, fast and heavy things which made my ears bleed (quickly switched to Concert).

I was around twenty minutes late one morning when Havoc had a small girl in the studio. He "interviewed" her, and no kidding, it was one of the best sequences I have ever had the fortune to hear. Looooonnnnnggg silences as he waited for her to finish colouring in whatever picture she was also working on. Absolutely no condescension. It was totally priceless.

Usually loved his music to boot. AND, although it was probably highly improper due to rights, his penchant for playing Bill Bryson reading his own writing opened the door for me with that writer. Wonderful, innovative, funny - I'll miss him so much.

That looks so lovely. Thank you Dyan. But really, though, 1/4 teaspoon of salt for 4 cups of beans? Doesn't sound like enough. Mind you, I did a very quick skim of the recipe.....
