  • Up Front: Oh, Grow Up,

    As a 16 year old, I wanted to be treated as an adult. We ran our own Venturer unit and were hard on the adult leader who was foisted on us (sorry Barry). So much so that he gave up - which suited us fine. At age 22 I bought a one way ticket to London, and lived and worked overseas, which confirmed to me that I had grown up.

    But I still didn't feel like a grown up. I worked. I travelled on my own. I bought a house. I co-habited. I got married. But I still didn't think of myself as a grown up. I think I first felt like a grown up, the day I carried my new-born son up the front steps of our house. A tsunami of fear and awe washed over me as I suddenly realised that I was totally responsible for this person.

    I think an important stepping stone is when you admit to yourself that your parents are fallible. I mean sure they make mistakes, like everyone, but at some point it dawns on you, that maybe, just maybe, you now know more about the world than they do. Each of my parents now seem to ask me for advice more often than I ask them.

    Not having parents that you can interact with could perhaps delay the day that you feel that you are a "proper" adult.

  • Legal Beagle: A little known story of…, in reply to Graeme Edgeler,

    Hmm. Interesting. I guess it would have be be done that way it order to assign the boundaries. However, a few dozen people one way or the other is not going to affect boundaries as much as choosing appropriate rivers / roads to draw a line along.

  • Legal Beagle: A little known story of…, in reply to Tristan,

    then i might get assigned as Maori

    I think this is the important thing to stress. A certain percentage of you is assigned as Māori based on your other answers.

    My understanding is that they look at the answers to the four questions that most strongly correlated with the results in people who did answer the question :

    1. the Māori descent responses of others in the household (responses which are connected by a dwelling form);
    2. the inclusion of a valid iwi in the iwi question;
    3. whether the answer to the ethnicity question included Māori as an ethnicity; and
    4. age

    If 20% of the people who answered the question "Yes" answered these questions the same as you, then you had a 20% chance of being assigned as Māori. Or, to put it another way, of every 100 people who answered the question unclearly, and answered these four questions the same way as you, 20 would be considered to have answered it "Yes", and 80 would be considered to have answered it "No".

    It's not used to allocate a single person one way or the other, but more to split groups one way and the other.

    Hope this helps explain it for those who were unclear.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Free and Legal,

    Does anyone else have problems with Friday Music posts ? My Firefox browser crashes every time (v 12.0). I have to resort to IE in order to view them. It is probably something to do with the embedded tracks, in combination with the age of my OS (Windows 5.0SP4). Time for an upgrade methinks.

  • Hard News: What did you do yesterday?,

    We cycled around the waterfront from Westhaven to Bastion Point, and went to the wonderfully laid back Waitangi Day Festival. Was hoping to get a tour of the meeting house there, but the tours were cancelled (the helpful guard didn't know why). We even got up and pogoed a bit when Dave Dobbyn played his older numbers (though there would have been very few in the crowd that were born when he bought his guitar in 1976). Found a couple a geocaches, and had a very pleasant ride home again. Everyone we met was good natured and friendly, and seemed to be enjoying themselves - at the concert, at Okahu bay, and at the Viaduct. It was nice to be out amongst it all.

  • Hard News: MegaBox: From f**k-all to zero,

    I use an ad blocker, but I only block ads that have movement in them. Any static ads are fine. Ads that have anything moving get blocked. On sites such as public address, if any ad served up by google has movement, I block it, but after awhile I get sick of blocking each ad so widen the block to all ads from that source, so that all ads served up in that space get blocked. If ads did not move, then I wouldn't be using an ad blocker at. (Those news tickers on news sites annoy me as well, but I cannot work out how to block them.)

    So unfortunately for advertisers, bad ads (ie ones I actively dislike) kill all opportunity to advertise to me.

    Whenever this subject comes up I usually clear my filters, but after a couple of weeks they are pretty much back to where they were.

    I love it when people bring facts to discussions. I just wish our media could.
