  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Megan Wegan,

I want to make a joke, but I am being nice, so I won’t.

I've had one or two decorous debauches at the Grand Chancellor (and the usual tedium of party conferences), and part of me thinks "well, it would have been really interesting to experience that" while another screeches "are you fucking HIGH?"

Yes, that too. We have those flights booked.

So was my booking at the Grand Chancellor - and every damn time I see those pictures...

Still, perhaps this is for another thread.

Quite, but what a tacky hook for giving that zombie meme another shamble round the block. The reasons for brains draining off to foreign shores are as complex as they were when a good chunk of my whanau became Nagati Bondi over thirty years ago.

the brain drain to Australia (educated New Zealanders will leave the nation in droves after this) on the ABC at the moment.

Which would be faintly amusing, if I didn't have an expat schoolmate who is having a rather tough time rebuilding the house and business that burned down while servicing a mortgage. Anyone who tells you that Australia is miraculously untouched by recession is being highly selective about where they direct the rose-hued Ray-Bans.

Is it just me or perhaps it’s a job for CactuslabMan to investigate?

Nope – it’s what happens when you hit reply and quote from a preceding post. I’ve had to apologise for that quite a bit, but the issue isn’t with PAS but the defective meatdrive between my ears. It will take, eventually. :)

You’ve perhaps been reading the same tirade I have. No comment.

@recordi: Ah, yes… fair point that you don’t declare local or national states of emergency lightly – and you can legitimately question the reasoning behind it. But Darth Brownlee taking another pony ride on the maggot-ridden corpse of democracy? No. Just no.

Oh, and unless I'm very much mistaken a state of emergency (and any subsequent extensions) automatically lapses after seven days -- to be quite cynical, that's a well I suspect you wouldn't want to go back to too many times before prickly questions were asked.

Chrs Hutching’s account for NBR gives the impression that the Copthorne and Grand Chancellor hotels will have to be demolished.

Hum... well I guess that's a booking that can be safely written off...

Time and place. Time and place.

QFT. And while the economic impact (yes, the dollar and the stock market took a hit) is a legitimate news story, I’m afraid it’s not really one I fig about. The impact on the RWC – so spectacularly irrelevant right now it verges on bad bad taste.

When I quoted Vicki Anderson’s piece, I was actually thinking of her thoughts on media coverage, not that aside about Parker.

Qute – and on that score I couldn’t agree more. For all my cynicism about New Zealand’s media culture, I think they’re well-aware that crossing the line into voyeuristic death porn will cause a swift and brutal backlash. With the live feeds I saw yesterday, I was pleasantly impressed by the lack of "shove a camera down the throat of the crying woman" vox pops.
