  • C4 not picking up The Daily Show this year,

Hopefully it will be picked up by Comedy Central and that will fix the bug on My Sky where it couldn't do series link. I had to set it manually every week!

If you don't enter this into White Whine, I swear I will.

  • OnPoint: Google to Embargo China,

    Country Gio and the Fush

    That quietly made my day.

The point I was making is that in the US dissent, debate and the mocking of the powers that be are the norm. In China? Not so much.

And my point was that since all this ever-so-clever mockery and all that the marvellous free speech are powerless to prevent bombs raining on my head, I might just take the country that represses its dissidents but doesn't bomb me over the one that gives its dissidents cable shows but does. This whole utterly ridiculous debate is predicated on China taking on all the worst aspects of American imperialism without changing in any other respect. Let's wait until it actually happens, shall we?

Oh, and just in case it sounds like the screed of a conservative commentator. Who has any doubt that it's exactly what Obama meant when he said that the troops on the ground will help with security?

I'll try again: the US might have free speech and delightful critical shows like the Daily Show, but it's just circenses if it doesn't effect any sort of change in the policy and the political orientation of the country in relation to the rest of the world. "At least I'll be able to watch the Daily Show" won't help you as an attitude if you're house is a rubble. And to clarify I don't think ScottY was being an arsehole, just that I find what he said a depressing reflection of the way things work.

When the All Blacks play in London, we quite like our 'nationals' to go completely nuts too, and our Government supported PR campaign to this effect could be seen as subversive in this light

That mega rugby ball of ours could be seen as well sinister, yes. If a big Lantern goes up in Auckland for Chinese new year, watch out, people. Rearm. Or something.

But if I had to choose my conqueror I’d still pick the US. I'd at least be able to watch the Daily Show.

This is the most depressing thought I've come across in a few months. The US are the largest global exporters of death and misery, not virtually and hypothetically but actually, at this very moment. The fact that we'll just laugh it off is a little dismaying.

Somebody alerted me to this earlier this morning - Things to remember while helping Haiti. Enjoy.

Peter Calder didn't like the movie. The comments to the review are the usual mix of depressing and hilarious.

The implication being that we'd be better treated as people by the Chinese government than by the US. My point is that is crap.

My point is that it's your premise (and Tom's) is ridicoluos. It's not even the devil you know vs. the devil you don't. It's the devil you know versus the devil you're paranoically fantasising about. How does Chinese imperialism even begin to compare with what the Americans have been doing? Backing coups and insurrections, invading countries all over the place, waging pre-emptive wars, not to speak of the economic terror imposed by its corporations... what have the Chinese done that compares with this? It's like you're both saying "if they started behaving like the US, we'd be in serious trouble". Well, fucking DUH!

ETA: thanks recordari, I didn't want to get into that.

    More history hinted at?

I thought they talked specifically about bringing peace to the tribes, but I might be misremembering.

invent an interesting new kind of people and then -away we go! Cowboys & Indians and - gasp! - this time the Indians win. With the help of a cowboy.

It's Dances with Wolves - in Space.
