  • OnPoint: Google to Embargo China,

If we round up all the unemployed people and put them in the army, we're only looking at, what, hundred-to-one odds? Plus, the unemployment rate drops to zero!

I'm guessing that if we declare war on China all of our social indices will drop to zero. Think of the savings! Then again, we might find that our anti-nuclear stance gets aggressively reversed.

(China now the third largest aid provider in the region? How bloody dare they!)

Time to start thinking about rearming, folks.

Oh, good, I was hoping we'd get to fight China at some point. And I may be a wishful thinker here, but I do so like our chances.

Experimenting on the society where we live, not so good.

We do it all the time. Hell, we unleashed cars on people in the last century. Great and fun and transportalicious; they have also killed more people than a major war. Also: asbestos. Besides of course alcohol and tobacco and all the other drugs that are in fact legal. And it's being done in many countries in the world so we can in fact observe the effects these experiments are having. We're not totally clueless.

Lucy, that's what you do? Awesome :-)

Failing to completely rule out the presence of barium and radium in things: a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it.

  • Hard News: Holiday Musings,

To paraphrase Ernesto Rossi, "if the Pope says it's raining and it happens to be raining, then the Pope is right". It can happen. (Actually, he disliked it for all the wrong reasons, but hey. It's still raining.)

In 1990 the England team played the opening round in Sardinia. In the early goings a bunch of them bothered some young women on a beach. Within half an hour a truckful of Sardinian appeared, armed solely with their indestructible noggins. And that was the end of trouble from the hooligans for the rest of the tournament.

But in the absence of head-butting Sardinians, I guess pot will do.

Well tonight 3 news says watching more than 1 hour Tv increases the chance of heart disease by 46%.

I watch hours of programming everyday - but on the computer. Suckers.

    Can't be having fun.

Also, it could lead to dancing, and we can't have none of that either.

And what of the mental health risks inherant with cannabis, gonna acknowledge any of those?

We're going to warn the kids about those for sure, given the high family risk. It may well be that alcohol is safer for them until they're in their thirties. But that's hardly the case for the general population, now, is it?

    Here's one view:

Actually, that one puts cannabis below alcohol. Do you even read the stuff you link?

The comorbidity of schizophrenia and substance misuse has attracted considerable attention in recent years (Mueser et al, 1992a; Soyka et al, 1993; Smith & Hucker, 1994). A review of Mueser et al (1990) on 32 studies published so far showed lifetime prevalence estimates of: 12.3-50% for alcohol misuse and/or dependence; 12.5-35.8% for cannabis misuse; 11.3-31% for misuse/dependence of stimulants; 5.7-15.2% for hallucinogens; 3.5-11.3% for sedatives; and 2-9% for opioids.

Go opioids! Might have to rethink what we're planting in the vege garden this year.

We are a practical, if not always wise, people.

Justine denies this, but I swear that once it came to buy a new fridge and she ventured, "I could make one".
