  • Cracker: Wallywood,

Actually, I just worked it out.

The airport wants to build a second runway through that hill (don't ask why. Airports always want second runways. It's like geeks wanting faster internet).

So they come up with a really daft concept, so that they can instead offer to rip out the hill and most of Miramar centre to land aeroplanes on.

    Brilliant, eh?

  • Hard News: Still crazy after all these years,

I still swear by the economics of buying second hand cars. At least in NZ.

Cheap garage workers. High interest rates. Big markups on new cars.

Plus, the NZ mindset is that it's better to drive a 10 year old Skyline that's a bit crap than a brand new Suzuki Swift.

    Bring back the mud!

I should make the cricket, or the after match function at least. As long as it isn't anywhere in sight of the "Wellywood" sign.

  • Up Front: Your Whining Is Important to Us,

Nazis tried to infiltrate boy scouts

To me the interest in those documents was quite how banal the whole thing was. SIS were writing terribly polite letters asking Chief Constables to look out and report on Nazi cyclists. The Chief Constables wrote back in equally polite form explaining that they had seen no Nazis but would be in touch should any eventuate.

I imagine that the "work" of NZSIS is much the same today. Infiltrating hippies and reporting back that they were mainly concerned with the price of weed, that sort of thing.

It's also clear quite how keen many pillars of the British Establishment were on Nazism, right up to the point when such enthusiasm would have led their spending WW2 in Wormwood Scrubs.

Two good reasons they kept the documents classified for 70 years, I suppose.

  • Hard News: Ready for the Big One?,

Also, I have very little in food and water, depending on whether I've been camping recently. But I know where the supermarket is in order to engage in community reliance.

Plus, my feeling about big disasters is that there's nothing one can do about it, so why stress? If there's a big enough supervolcano, then humans will become extinct. We had 50,000 years, it's been good, so bye...

ham radio enthusiasts have been very helpful in natural disasters recently, but that seems like a dying hobby

The internet won't fail though? It was designed to withstand nuclear war, so surely earthquakes and supervolcanoes wouldn't break it.

Distant memory it was only 1 million people

No wonder we lost. The players can sense not having all of NZ behind them, you know. Like how sharks can smell fear.

  • Hard News: Still crazy after all these years,

Meanwhile, Garrotte has said that he just "wanted a debate" on his plans to <strike>exterminate brown people</strike> sterilize predicate child abusers.

Annette King, on the other hand, suggested that the money could better be invested in parenting programmes..

It may be my twisted mind, but I imagined someone, possibly Speer, standing up at the Wannsee Conference and suggesting that really, building all these concentration camps wasn't going to be cost-effective and maybe we could educate the Jews to behave in a more Germanic manner.

(Yes, I'm Godwined. So shoot me).

  • Hard News: Dropping the Ball,

Radio New Zealand can't afford to cover the Commonwealth Games

Can't they ghetto it and do commentary from Wellington while watching telly? I seem to recall a few small radio stations getting away with this.

Also, Mt Eden Community Board have a few good name choices for a pointless new link road being built for the RWC - Minto Rd, Mandela Way, Drop Kick Lane.

  • Hard News: The Press, Privacy and The Paps,

I'm not entirely sure but anyone saying something along the lines of "she was asking for it" makes me very uneasy.

    Hang on.

She was paid an immense amount of money out of the pockets of the British taxpayer to be the royal family's glamour girl.

She ran the equivalent of a political campaign to establish her brand in UK and world society. I'm not sure what the eventual aim was (William to be King ahead of his father? Personal glory? Just a symptom of her psychosis?) but the campaign was organised and unrelenting.

Part of this is that she was in regular contact with journalists and papparazi to ensure her profile in the media. Pretending to hide from the media and be upset by it was all part of this game.

On the night of her death, as Deborah states, she had the option of posing for a few photos and going back to sleep in the Ritz, or heading off to her lovers flat and being photographed doing so. She decided instead to take a risk and tear across town at high speed with a drunk, drugged driver.

She was no more a victim than any kid who decides to go for a burn up and wipes out. Really.

    (Also, she's a historical figure now. I don't think non-denegration rules apply?)
