One of my ancestors and two of his wives got caught up in the 18th century law system. Their reward was a one-way trip to Australia
Kennedy Murray (Google him if you need more details) went through the Scottish system and was obviously an opportunist petty thief, of course now he would be unlucky to get fined let alone sent around the world
The women went through the English system, I think for stealing pieces of material, I have yet to find what drove them to this but there are hints that revenge for not handing out sexual favours lead to at least one accusation.
In some ways the trip was the making of them but quite frankly unless you were both rich and titled it was not a good time to be alive
“Convict women” by Kay Daniels is an interesting look at the results of the legal system of the time -
I think" stupid "covers it rather better than refering to their ethnicity
In defense of race relations down here I can only record my personal experience that it was not till I lived in the North island that I heard Maori refered to as people who were inferior to the rest of NZersOn the other hand the county I live in was one of the whitest in NZ and at that stage those that were here were mostly whanau but still it was a shock

Diversion is apparently not going to be offered to these "rich prick" kids
Although it is up to the Police to offer it, most first time minor criminals get it as right but it is only offered once
Most "rich kids" only need it once because they are quick learners unlike habitual criminals who are certainly notJust watching the "list" on Court days proves that, quite a mixture of people and ages completing Diversion and a depressing bunch of slow learners getting fines and time

What a fantastic idea, hope we get see it on one of the free view channels soon
It would make great change from the endless crime shows that run a the moment
Though I do have one worry, becuase we have higher standards now (better tech etc) will the golden memories be just more crap! -

Potential wine makers. maybe go farming, fishing or the latest family trade, rent racking, who knows what they will end up doing, that is part of the joy of lifeI do know that we did make the mistake of eating just about all our stocks of whitebait last weekend (thanks Islander for the great recipe) so there is one family trade that will be getting a thrashing when the weather stabalizes

I am now in the rather nice position to be able to give to charities
The over haeds of most charities horrified us when we did the research
We give (mostly) to a charity where the money is held for three years and the interest is used to pay for the infrastructure
We also have some say on how and where the money will be used
Unfortunatly while this model has worked well in the past, last years financial shake-outs have given a bit of a glitch
But it does give a nice out to those telephone rings at tea time
