We get Airpoints on our credit card so I thought it a good idea to use the credit card to pay the council rates. Big mistake apparently. The Council accepted the payment and I thought all was OK, I could pay off the credit card instead of paying the rates in instalments, get the Airpoints and save a bit of money at the same time. Wrong, when I got the CC statement it came up with a Cash Withdrawal for the rates payment, which accrues interest from day one and does not get you Airpoints. So I phoned the Council and was told that they don't accept credit card payments, I phoned the Bank and asked how someone other than me could make cash withdrawals and was told that they couldn't.
Go figure that one. -
All devices connected to the EFT network must comply with PCI DSS...
And there is a very good explanation of how that works Here

IIRC the first story about this was a spokesman for the owners, Auckland City Council, said they became aware of it when a "skimmer" (fake card reader) or 2 were found attached to machines in the Downtown car park, Auckland, they may have been there for years. They later added that it was possible that the security had been compromised somewhere outside of their area of control, thus resolving them of any responsibility.

Isn't just assumed that John Key is personally responsible for everything even slightly crappy that has ever happened in the whole wide 'verse since just before the extinction of the dinosaurs?
Nah. he's done nothing, nothing I tell you.
The URL clicked through to billing.microsoft.com -- which, amazingly, came up with an invalid certificate and a warning that this might not be the real billing.microsoft.com.
That sounds suspiciously like Phishing to me. The golden rule is never use the link in an eMail purporting to come from anything to do with Banking or any financial deals, if you do DON'T fill in any request for passwords, account numbers or, in fact, anything. Always go to the Banking site proper.

A dozen responses...yet no-one has suggested John Key is behind this conspiracy so far?? Come on centre left, you can do better!
Nah, it was Hone Key who said he could do better.
We do the truth to power thingy. -
there are plenty of places to use a CC # online without knowing the CVV code on the back.
Call me old fasioned but I wouldn't touch one of those sites with your credit card.

Ben Gracewood, who's no mug, has suggested that there might be a much larger breach or series of breaches that the banks aren't talking about yet.
I have often wondered about the security of credit cards. How easy would it be to place a small transaction on all the card numbers that, say, a waiter or checkout worker have collected over the years. When you charge to a card you have the option of stating what you want to appear on their statement, how hard is it to write "Account Charge" or "Card Management fee" ?.
If the charge is less than $5 most people would dismiss it as just another credit card company "charge" and do nothing about it.Strangely the new card had the same number.
Is the 3 digit security number on the back of the card the same?.

Frankly, Tim, I'm disappointed in you.
A wonderful example of Poe's Law. Personally, and I'm sure many of you have noticed, I use the winky face to indicate that what I have said is not to be taken at face value. People that take things at face value are part of the problem, innit.

But somewhat ironic given you're making it in a thread that has partly become about unsubstantiated conspiracy... =)
I resemble that remark Sir ;-)
The Brethren link is a tricky one but I just know it's there, Bloke down the pub told me, honest. Said he read it on the internet or something. -
so where were we. Oh yes, the Demo-Crazies. I've done a little poking around and discovered some tenuous links.
All this talk of Democracy, or the perceived lack of it, can be traced back to the anti MMP brigade, could all this have anything to do with the upcoming referendum regarding that?. Also, bigish leap here but off the top of my balding head, ETS and the DOC, foreign investors planting native trees on conservation land and the Brethren. How all this ties up exactly I don't know but I smell something ratty or fishy or at least iffy.
Thoughts? penny for them. -
Cripes, what a discussion! I have been busy all day, running an oral examination*
So much for name suppression.
