Hard News: The uncooling of the inner West, in reply to
I had hopes that there might be some nice smaller unit development happening on the south fringe of Pt Chev by Great North Road, which would put us within cooee of my old neighborhood, but the watering down of the Unitary Plan doesn’t give me much hope.
There's still a chance they'll get New Lynn right.

This is the norm in Europe and it would have prevented the whole un-affordable house problem had some far sighted Govt. decided to build more state houses. Oh hang on, they did but then National gets in and decided it was compulsory to own your own home unless you were a Feral, in which case you should just curl up and die.
And now the government has declared it has no interest in building, or even owning, more state houses.

My last place in Auckland was a flat in a rambling old house in Mt Eden (flatting with Jason Kemp, actually – hi Jase!). That was back in the 90s. I shudder to think what that would cost now.
It's been done up and sold this year for $2 million. Soz.

Barring some control on the price of those properties, I can’t see any way that could have been prevented.
But there are ways of accommodating more people in the inner suburbs. I'm all in favour of suburbs like ours being intensified. There are so many good reasons to do it.
Holding on to the past is unlikely to succeed. Rather than developing policy to bring more young people into your area, why don’t you follow the young people to the suburbs that they are moving to?
I don't want to move 20km out of town, and I suspect few of them do either. What's so magical and inviolable about present population densities? Why not more townhouses and low-rise blocks near public transport and cycleways?

Come on Russell – this reads like a UKIP post in the Torygraph – Oh No! things around me are changing!
Oh, please. That’s a completely bizarre characterisation of what I said.
I’m lamenting a potential loss of diversity and hoping for policies that will bring in more young adults to live in my neighbourhood. Clearly, just like UKIP.
But yeah, I do think I'm entitled to not want to die the death of Parnell.

Hard News: TVNZ: Emptied out, in reply to
The only reason for not selling is they can’t find a buyer.
More specifically, a buyer at a non-embarrassing price.
TVNZ was officially assessed as being worth $211 million in 2010. It could conceivably fail to fetch half of that at the moment.

If you missed Media Take last night, it's here.

In really-not-getting-it news, Barfoot and Thompson's Paul Thompson has a confused and contradictory rant in which it's all young people's fault. What an ass.

How much does this have to do with the revelation earlier this year that some staff in the Maori and Pacific unit were doing campaigning for the Labour Party using company resources, on company time?
Maybe nothing, maybe a lot.
I'm sure it didn't help -- it was certainly something TVNZ management wanted to go away. But it's not the main driver.
What that episode did show is the problem with editorial management there. Someone should have picked up that behaviour sooner, and would have if there'd been someone senior walking the floor and talking to people.

David! I have received a request for similar reportage from you on the ebola threat in Wellington. Please advise, as any length you see fit.
