...but don't try that in Amerika

Unless you happen to be the First Lady, in which case it's all good. Both Roosevelt and Obama...

I'm trying artichokes. No idea when they're ready, or what to do with them. I could have cleared Mr Spider for a better shot, but I presume he pitched his tent there for a reason. I'll call it pest control, for the moment, although this garden seems totally free from pests. Maybe all the companion planting worked.

My bike gang, Mission Bay. Bastion Point with Savage Memorial and ridiculously long queue of parked cars. We only biked because I had to park so damned far away.

    1. First of my summer reds.
    2. The Victory Garden after 2 weeks of committed neglect.
    3. Surprised at the extent to which this lettuce patch is putting out, considering that it was a plant-and-forget

Still got two beds to fill, building up the soil slowly. This garden is 100% organic, by which I mean nothing was brought to the site beyond seedlings, and the cardboard boxes that I put on the grass beneath to start it off. No herb or pesticide ever used. Indeed, none used on the section for around 7 years. Generally I don't water it, except during the seedling phase if the ground looks really dry. The fertilizer is all "worm-wees", the liquid run-off from the worm farm. The solid is finally making it into the last beds, which will probably be prolific.

I made the beds themselves from about $50 worth of wood I got off TradeMe. There are 8 in total.

The back fence line, an apparently unmowed jungle, produced a couple of dozen delicious strawberries. No photos, sorry, I was too greedy and ate them on the spot. They were sweeter by far than anything I've managed to procure during the Christmas season.

  • Capture: The Castle, in reply to Islander,

It’s how your tobacco is tamped!

Tobacco smokers are well catered for on the convenience front. But unprocessed medicinal herbs don't burn so well, and the smokers find themselves having to light practically every puff, inhaling the byproducts of butane or alcohol combustion in the process. The lighters get hot and uncomfortable to hold, especially upside down, and striking them can become difficult. The huge flame is overkill if only small puffs are desired, so the smoke itself is much less hot, and there is less wastage between puffs.

A small side effect is that the glowing end is far less noticeable than a sparking flash and a big flame, and switching it on and off is soundless, so if you're trying to have a peaceful smoke at night without being noticed, it's good for that.

I was actually trying to invent a portable, quick, low volume vaporizer as an even healthier alternative, the lighter came as an afterthought.

  • Capture: The Castle,

Feels like a let down, I thought it was obvious. It's a lighter, for pipes and fireworks, invented one Guy Fawkes years ago, and forgotten. Found in a drawer, still working fine. But the other uses you guys suggested were much more interesting. Pipes have always been annoying things to light because the bowl points down, hence the hooked end.

It could do that, certainly. So long as you only needed it for a few minutes. It chews the batteries up fast.

There's nobody in the water beyond about 10m out! I guess all the surfies were still to hungover too get up. Might explain why the child lifeguard is on duty.

Today at Cheltenham/North Head. Some boats:

Pic 1: A classic old dude in what appears to be an actual jolly old longboat. He rowed off in the general direction of Rangitoto, shown behind.
Pic 2: A minute later, something that would give me pause on crossing that straight with only 50cm of freeboard (or none at all like the lady with the paddle). The Quickcat, a triple decker ferry, shown for perspective makes it look huge...
Pic 3: ...Until you see what's currently docked at Prince's Wharf, the same Quickcat can just be seen at its waterline. The Cloud just makes the first row of open decks, and the wing on top seems to be touching the Ponsonby Post Office at the top of College Hill. I'm looking down on this from North Head.
Also, sailing ships reaching for home to the stiff Northerly, and Devonport in the foreground, sheltered as always. Oh, and my silly little town, replete with Skypodermic, and Vero with seat half-lifted.

    taming recalcitrant nostril hairs?

It does cut through hair like a hot knife through butter. Skin is a little slower, it might take a second to burn a nostril ring hole.

or possibly for sucking dust out of panasonic lumix lenses?

That's very specific. A pet hate?

or a Cone of Silence detetector.....

Yes, if you touched the cat with this in there, and didn't hear what the cat had to say about it, it's a genuine cone of silence.
