  • Hard News: Media Take Takes a Break, in reply to ,

It’s also unfortunate that it takes the use smuggled technology to illegaly film the domestic violence, for it to be taken seriously. Can’t we be a little bit more egalitarian?

    How about "Prison TV"?
I'm sure Julie Christie and TV3 could put a package together, after all, their studios are just over the road from the prison, live feed even.
Imagine, people could watch and gloat at the "Purp" who pinched their car, as he suffers at the hands of the "Felon" that sold him drugs that he didn't pay for.
It would also make the likes of Serco clean up their act to make them look good on TV.
    What could possibly go wrong?.

  • Speaker: House prices and the "Magic Money",

So why not use GV, or is GV the product of the sales numbers?.
Is it like counting your chickens in the basket you shouldn't have put all the eggs in?

  • Speaker: House prices and the "Magic Money", in reply to David Hood,

If a house has never been sold in the period it is impossible for it to be part of the growth, if a house has been sold 15 times in 15 years, that one house will have contributed strongly to the growth in prices.

I can't see this. Surely, if the value of a house has increased by(x)% over (y) Years what difference does the number of times it has been bought or sold mean?.

  • Speaker: House prices and the "Magic Money",

    So how does this work?.
As with affordability of pensions, with an aging population. Surely we are looking at those people who have, over the years, paid off their mortgages at the same time as their property values going through the roof, as it were.
With the House prices in Auckland rising as the rest of the country virtually stagnates, these people could well be cashing up and "Retiring to the Country", cash rich, one less mortgage on the books?.
It needn't be offshore money, it could just be that the "Magic Money" is coming from those that made the "Big Bucks" since the 80's on spiraling house price inflation, trading down to the cheap rural properties and buying an "apartment in town" for the kids, who will never be able to get on that mythical "Property Ladder".

  • Speaker: Protesting private prisons,

How about tendering out the public duties of the Police?
These guys seem to fit the bill...

    Protective' of community
Marua Rd resident Jane Estrada said [redacted for commercial sensitivity] were often protective of the local community.

Once during a power outage, the men knocked on every door down the street to make sure everyone was ok and see if help was needed, she said.

She goes on with her praise...

"They seem peaceful there all the time. They're very caring.

"I think they're protecting the community but we just have no idea what goes on inside. It's something different then I expected when it's a community with [redacted for commercial sensitivity] "

She said she had not heard of any burglaries in the street. "It's a good thing they're around. No one would dare," she said.

    Sounds ideal eh?.

There is no way any Government should be allowed to sell the care of its citizens into the hands of profit-driven corporations.

The most unseemly corporations at that...

We were, and still are, westies. Never Bogan.

Very true, Westies, every country with a west coast has them. I think its a Sunrise/Sunset thing. Whereas Bogon, in my humble opinion, is a Culture/Class thing.
