What a mess :-).
Might be a legal challenge over conflict of interest issues;

And what design advice the panel did get - they look to have ignored;
Such fun.

The Flag Consideration Panel asked for the 'expert' advice of a Nike sportshoe designer who previously designed washing machines, writes Grant McLachlan.

Am i taking these theories of media agenda setting, and the TPPA cover up to seriously?
It’s not the media setting the agenda, rather it is the government. I haven’t found the coverage by MSM on this one necessarily bias (plenty of different viewpoints have been reported on) and neither do I think the flag consideration has been over-reported at the expense of other pressing issues (such as the TPPA). And I don’t think that John Key necessarily put the initiative forward solely to distract us from TPPA matters.

According to this opinion - you must be a part of the "liberal punditry" and you are displaying the characteristics of "adolescent nihilism";
I had to laugh. Great alternative point of view if you're doing an essay on it :-).
I'm with you, there is a sense of realpolitik in the whole consideration, its timing and methodology. But if there was any intention to divert attention away from other more pressing issues (TPPA included) - it hasn't necessarily worked anyway. In fact in many respects from the get-go it had the opposite effect, creating its own unique squabble over government priorities;

Red Peak is the business!
How do we get the flag panel to change their minds?
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/71768480/support-for-red-peak-flag-on-the-rise
A spokeswoman for the Flag Panel said that the shortlist was final.
"The flag consideration panel were appointed to make a decision, and cabinet has approved those four alternative flags for the referendum"
Who wants to bet there will be a flip flop: the Flag Panel will do a mea culpa (because the PM's pollsters are actually the ones in charge) - and Red Peak will get a look in as a fifth option.
Face it, Key couldn't give a stuff what the new flag looks like or represents for that matter - he just wants to be able to say that the flag was changed under his "rule".

How about we scrap our entire Immigration Services departmental expense (roughly $210million pa);
http://www.treasury.govt.nz/budget/2015/suppestimates/suppest15immig.pdf
Increase our refugee quota to the equivalent of the present migrant numbers (the UN effectively takes on the full cost of that processing function)
And spend the saved $210m on building our capacity to settle these new refugee citizens.
Point is, Immigration Services and the whole policy surrounding it doesn't do/achieve what the government would like us to believe it did anyway (its purpose to my mind is to wages low for low skilled employment opportunities);

How lovely - pupils at Ngaio School obviously got shown the video on flag design when the flag panelist visited their school. And the pupil's top selection from their project follows the template instruction better than any of the panel's official choices!!
See it here;

Yes, it was all over Twitter too. I couldn’t work out who took the original photo.
More to the point – I’ll bet they are an imported product (packaged and manufactured overseas) – so one of our potential flags was either designed by a factory shop person in some far away place – or Kyle has a copyright claim to lodge somewhere :-).

There is no other country in the world that has a pure black and white flag - yet we get two black and white options out of four - just another design oddity about this final selection.

Spitting votes will happen when you have two very similar choices. So those who would vote for a good fern/stars flag, will have their votes split.
Not in an STV vote - more to the point the ferns votes will come together if people rank the three ferns in consecutive order. So that whole "split the vote" idea doesn't work based on the way they've structured the referendum. It would work were it a first-past-the post referendum, but it's not - it's rank your preference, or STV.
