Hard News: Not yet standing upright, in reply to
Best designed flag I've EVER come across. Says something very positive about what Maori have to offer in terms of design expertise we never bothered to capitalise on.

Still have to hand it to the Gvt: they structured the process cleverly so that the most important bit – creating the new design – took place while the least number of people were paying attention.
How true. I keep thinking what an opportunity lost (or should I say ’cost' – given the $26m price tag). For me I’d like to have seen a shortlist of emblems that have meaning to NZers first (e.g., whale tail, fish hook, silver fern, southern cross, Union Jack, koru, etc.) and then set up equally as many professional design teams – each working with one of the shortlisted emblems in order to produce a short-short list.

That Hundertwasser’s flag wasn’t included
See the Note here on that;

Surely a profressional panel/process would have sought copyright permission from whomever the owner of it is - given the number of NZers who were already keen/familiar with the design?

All the more so since we don’t actually record spoiled ballots as anything other than “informal”.
But surely media will report it for what it is - a protest vote.

That I think is the Trevor Mallard suggestion? I'm a bit nervous about whether it will work in terms of a spoiler - as it actually participates in what has been a shocker of a process. It only 'works' in the event hypnoflag wins the first round and fails at the second vote.
So I'm toying between that and Winston's Peters' spoil the first vote altogether - as that gets recognised in the voting as a protest about the whole shambles.
Andrew Little's no vote at all option is really the worst - we have more than enough apathy to go around.

This process is off the rails.
And it is recognised that the black and white fern logo is trademarked;
Former Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming chose the black and white stylised fern as his favourite. That design includes a fern which is trademarked and used as a logo by Government groups.
Change the Flag spokesman Lewis Holden said the use of it as a logo might damage its chances although the maple leaf design on Canada's flag was a biscuit tin logo.

What? It would be good if the panel explained the implication of that. Why pick one design that is somehow disadvantaged over others?

Hmm..
Detailed due diligence will now be completed on these designs, including robust intellectual property checks.

Someone should send an OIA to NZTE and ask if that option breaches their TM. Wonder how they’d answer that :-).

I'm following NZ First's recommendation;

I'd be absolutely delighted if the spoiled votes outweighed any vote for a single alternate design.
That would send the best message ever to John Key.
